Position Overview

The Department of Corrections is seeking qualified individuals for multiple full-time Correctional Officer Private positions (Grade D-21) for the September 2025 Correctional Officer Entrance Level Training Academy. This entry-level role offers a rewarding opportunity to make a positive impact in the community.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide care, custody, and control of inmates in a direct supervision environment.
• Conduct regular head counts and monitor inmate behavior.
• Assist in managing inmates and maintaining security.
• Conduct searches for contraband and respond to emergencies.
• Perform CPR and first aid when necessary.
• Prepare reports and maintain security equipment inventory.
• Provide counsel and ensure fair treatment of inmates.

Qualifications

• U.S. Citizen or Resident Alien Status
• High School diploma or GED recognized by the Maryland State Board of Education
• At least 18 years of age
• Valid U.S. driver’s license with 6 months of driving experience

Requirements and Conditions

• Be prepared to pass the Correctional Officer Physical Ability Test (COPAT).
• Review credit and driving history.
• Register with Selective Service if applicable.
• Willing to work in a correctional facility, including shifts, weekends, and holidays.
• Willing to wear issued uniforms and participate as a critical/essential employee during emergencies.
• Complete all phases of the selection process, including background checks, medical exams, polygraph, and psychological screening.
