Histology Laboratory Assistant, Part Time Day Shift

Job Summary

Provides administrative assistance and logistical support to the Histology Laboratory through a general understanding of Surgical Pathology Laboratory Operations and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities
  1. Prepares cases to be grossed-in in the Histology laboratory, accessions cases, checks tissue-examination forms and specimens for completeness and accuracy, and labels specimen cassettes and slides with accession numbers according to varied specimen requirements.
  2. Assists in processing specimens for testing at the Regional Laboratory Histology Department.
  3. Follows established procedures for processing patient samples and determines the acceptability of specimens.
  4. Places orders for tests to be performed at reference laboratories and communicates with medical, clinical, and technical staff regarding specimen inquiries and problems.
  5. Maintains departmental reports, tissue blocks, and slides in proper order and storage.
  6. Files and maintains microscope slides and paraffin blocks.
  7. Performs instrument and equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and records actions taken.
  8. Prepares stains, performs, and documents QC on stains and reagents in accordance with regulatory standards.
  9. Assists pathologists in fine needle aspiration procedures, maintaining related reagents and stains.
  10. Adheres to laboratory safety and infection control practices, wearing protective equipment as required.
  11. Recycles chemicals and disposes of biohazardous waste per policies.
  12. Maintains inventory of supplies, orders supplies, and keeps work area clean and organized.
  13. Maintains patient confidentiality and presents a professional manner to patients and staff.
  14. Shuttles specimens and documents between the laboratory and pathology offices.
  15. Assists with training new employees and performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience in a Histology Laboratory.
  • Graduation from a Medical Assistant Program, or equivalent training, or completion of 20+ credit hours in Life Sciences.
  • Certification or documentation of coursework completion required.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, laboratory procedures, infection control, and anatomy.
  • Effective communication, organizational, and data management skills.
  • Attention to detail and ability to work independently.
  • Proficiency with applicable computer software preferred.
Additional Information
  • Sign-on bonus of $1500.
  • Schedule: 7:30 am - 11:30 am, Monday to Friday.
  • Employment type: Full-time, Mid-Senior level.
