Job Summary
Provides administrative assistance and logistical support to the Histology Laboratory through a general understanding of Surgical Pathology Laboratory Operations and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
- Prepares cases to be grossed-in in the Histology laboratory, accessions cases, checks tissue-examination forms and specimens for completeness and accuracy, and labels specimen cassettes and slides with accession numbers according to varied specimen requirements.
- Assists in processing specimens for testing at the Regional Laboratory Histology Department.
- Follows established procedures for processing patient samples and determines the acceptability of specimens.
- Places orders for tests to be performed at reference laboratories and communicates with medical, clinical, and technical staff regarding specimen inquiries and problems.
- Maintains departmental reports, tissue blocks, and slides in proper order and storage.
- Files and maintains microscope slides and paraffin blocks.
- Performs instrument and equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and records actions taken.
- Prepares stains, performs, and documents QC on stains and reagents in accordance with regulatory standards.
- Assists pathologists in fine needle aspiration procedures, maintaining related reagents and stains.
- Adheres to laboratory safety and infection control practices, wearing protective equipment as required.
- Recycles chemicals and disposes of biohazardous waste per policies.
- Maintains inventory of supplies, orders supplies, and keeps work area clean and organized.
- Maintains patient confidentiality and presents a professional manner to patients and staff.
- Shuttles specimens and documents between the laboratory and pathology offices.
- Assists with training new employees and performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Minimum one (1) year of experience in a Histology Laboratory.
- Graduation from a Medical Assistant Program, or equivalent training, or completion of 20+ credit hours in Life Sciences.
- Certification or documentation of coursework completion required.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, laboratory procedures, infection control, and anatomy.
- Effective communication, organizational, and data management skills.
- Attention to detail and ability to work independently.
- Proficiency with applicable computer software preferred.

- Sign-on bonus of $1500.
- Schedule: 7:30 am - 11:30 am, Monday to Friday.
