The State of North Carolina seeks a Correctional Sergeant at Bertie Correctional Institution, responsible for supervising staff and ensuring safety protocols. This full-time position includes comprehensive state benefits and offers a salary range reflective of qualifications and experience. Description of Work
This position is assigned to Bertie Correctional Institution.
This position is responsible for providing supervision for subordinate staff, conducting shift line-up, making shift assignments, and inspecting all personnel to determine if they are physically and mentally capable of assuming an assigned post. This position is responsible for conducting investigations and performs searches of persons, places and objects. Responsible for completing, reviewing, and maintaining time reports, duty roster, leave schedules, performance evaluations and administrative forms. Makes security inspections of the facility and grounds; monitors posts to ascertain that officers are alert, that discipline is being maintained, and that assignments are carried out properly. Perform rescue functions to include CPR, basic first aid, physically removing people from dangerous areas and using firefighting equipment to include fire hoses, extinguishers and breathing apparatus. Responsible for identifying training needs and coordinates delivery of training to subordinate staff. Accounts for persons and funds and ensures that all equipment is operationally ready for use. This position works closely with and reports directly to the Correctional Captain III.
This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.

If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.
“As of January 1, 2025, there are new increase adjustments to the state’s pay plans which were approved by the State Human Resources Commission, effective January 1, 2025. The new salary range(s) will be $43,738-$76,542.” Prior applicants will remain under consideration and do not need to reapply.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of experience as a Correctional Sergeant, or two years of experience as a Correctional Sergeant III; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
