Job summary

CBIZ Talent Solutions seeks a technically strong accounting leader to drive the enterprise-wide monthly close, own core accounting processes, and improve financial reporting across manufacturing and distribution operations. The role supports acquisitions, standardizes processes across eight systems, and leads the accounting function in Dallas, TX, with initial transition travel to Washington.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance; CPA strongly preferred.
  • Public accounting background with Big Four or respected regional firm.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, audit, reconciliations, close, and internal controls.
  • Operating-company manufacturing experience required.
  • Experience with inventory, BOM, cost accounting, freight, duties, and product margins.
  • Experience supporting acquisitions, purchase accounting, opening balance sheets, and post-close integration.
  • Private equity environment experience beneficial but not required.
  • Willingness to work on-site in Dallas and travel to Washington during transition.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the enterprise-wide monthly close and establish a standardized process for a five-business-day close.
  • Own core accounting functions: GL, reconciliations, accruals, intercompany, AR/AP, bad debt, returns, and reserves.
  • Assess and remediate gaps across multiple systems/locations; develop prioritized plan.
  • Improve the quality and usefulness of financial statements and management reporting.
  • Establish accounting policies, close calendars, review standards, and documentation.
  • Partner with operations to explain accounting issues and translate findings into business implications.
  • Ensure accurate inventory and manufacturing accounting including BOMs, direct costs, freight, and margins.
  • Develop cost-costing improvements and margin reporting; support cost-accounting functions.
  • Support acquisitions through diligence, opening balance sheets, and post-close integration; standardize across systems.
  • Lead controls, audit, and technical accounting; strengthen the control environment and oversight.

Job description

  • Lead the enterprise-wide monthly close and establish a disciplined, standardized process designed to achieve an accurate five-business-day close.
  • Take ownership of core accounting, including the general ledger, account reconciliations, accruals, intercompany activity, accounts receivable, accounts payable, bad debt, customer returns, and other balance sheet reserves.
  • Assess the existing books across multiple systems and locations, identify gaps and inconsistencies, and develop a prioritized remediation plan.
  • Improve the quality, consistency, and usefulness of financial statements, operating results, and management reporting.
  • Establish clear accounting policies, close calendars, review standards, account ownership, and documentation across the organization.
  • Partner with operations to explain accounting issues, translate findings into business implications, and improve the quality of source information and operational decision-making.

Manufacturing, Distribution, and Cost Accounting

  • Ensure accurate accounting for inventory and manufacturing activity, including bills of material, direct costs, freight, import duties, taxes, overhead, and product margins.
  • Evaluate current cost-capture processes and improve the accuracy of product costing and margin reporting across manufacturing, remanufacturing, and distribution operations.
  • Develop consistent methodologies for reserves, including customer returns, core return privileges and balances, bad debt, inventory exposure, and other key estimates.
  • Provide the analytical foundation for margin improvement, cost savings, and operational performance initiatives.
  • Help define the future cost accounting capability and support the eventual recruitment or development of dedicated cost accounting resources.

Acquisitions, Integration, and Scalability

  • Support acquisitions through diligence, purchase accounting, opening balance sheets, accounting integration, and post-close reporting.
  • Drive greater standardization across the company’s eight accounting systems and create a practical roadmap toward a more integrated platform.
  • Build accounting processes, policies, controls, and reporting that can support a growing business.
  • Conduct or support monthly performance reviews with operating leaders and improve accountability for financial results.
  • Support debt covenant reporting and provide accurate information for lenders, the sponsor, auditors, and other external stakeholders.

Controls, Audit, and Technical Accounting

  • Strengthen the control environment and establish appropriate review, approval, reconciliation, and documentation standards.
  • Lead the annual audit process, proactively resolve accounting issues, and reduce late adjustments.
  • Apply strong GAAP and technical accounting judgment to acquisition accounting, revenue, inventory, reserves, and other complex matters.
  • Create reliable consolidated reporting and ensure consistency in the application of accounting policies across entities and locations.

Organization and Leadership

  • Assess the current accounting organization, clarify roles and reporting relationships, and built out an accounting function in Dallas, Tx.
  • Recruit, develop, and lead a capable accounting team with clear accountability, high standards, and a hands-on leadership approach.
  • Create a culture in which finance and accounting are responsive, analytical, operationally connected, and viewed as a resource to the business.
  • Operate effectively across a geographically dispersed organization and lead change with urgency, transparency, and sound judgment.

The ideal candidate is a technically strong, analytically rigorous accounting leader who combines public accounting training with meaningful manufacturing operating-company experience.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field; CPA strongly preferred.
  • Public accounting foundation with a Big Four or respected regional firm.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, audit, account reconciliations, monthly close, internal controls, and core accounting processes.
  • Operating-company experience in manufacturing is required.
  • Working knowledge of inventory, bills of material, cost accounting, freight, duties, import-related taxes, product margins, reserves, and high-volume distribution.
  • Experience supporting acquisitions, purchase accounting, opening balance sheets, and post-close integration.
  • Demonstrated success improving a fragmented or underdeveloped accounting function, accelerating the close, and strengthening financial reporting.
  • Experience in a private equity-backed environment is beneficial but not required.
  • Ability and willingness to work on-site in Dallas and travel to Washington during the initial transition period.
