Job summary

Pugh Executive Search is assisting in the search for a Controller for a PE-backed, Arlington–based client. Reporting to the CEO, this individual will lead a small Accounting team of up to four and serve as the organization’s primary owner of day-to-day accounting operations and consolidated financial reporting.

The Controller will direct all financial and operational reporting, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and timely delivery of consolidated financial statements, FP&A outputs, and audit

Qualifications

• Hands-on Financial Controller with 8+ years of accounting experience.
• Manufacturing or construction background preferred.
• CPA strongly preferred.
• Deep knowledge of project accounting, job costing, ASC 606 revenue recognition.
• GAAP and core accounting procedures.
• Experience overseeing planning and budgeting across multiple entities.
• Proven success leading external financial audits.
• Experience with PE-backed portfolio companies is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Lead day-to-day accounting operations and consolidated financial reporting.
• Direct financial and operational reporting, ensuring accuracy and timely delivery of statements.
• Strengthen internal controls and enforce process discipline.
• Motivate and develop the accounting team while managing multiple priorities.
• Oversee the general ledger, monthly close, and audits.

Reporting to the CEO, this individual will lead a small Accounting team of up to four and serve as the organization’s primary owner of day‑to‑day accounting operations and consolidated financial reporting.

The Controller will direct all financial and operational reporting, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and timely delivery of consolidated financial statements, FP&A outputs, and audit requirements. This role needs a hands‑on leader who can manage the g/l, monthly close, reporting, strengthen internal controls, enforce process discipline, and uphold the integrity of financial information across the business.

This is a high‑impact, highly visible position that plays a critical role in driving financial rigor, operational alignment, and overall organizational performance.

Requirements

• Demonstrated experience as a hands‑on Financial Controller
• 8+ years of progressive accounting experience; manufacturing or construction background preferred
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA strongly preferred
• Deep knowledge of project accounting, job costing, and ASC 606 revenue recognition
• Strong command of GAAP and core accounting procedures
• Experience overseeing planning and budgeting across multiple entities
• Proven success leading external financial audits
• Advanced proficiency in Excel and MS Office; experience with mid‑tier ERP systems
• Clear, effective communicator—both written and verbal—with strong listening skills
• High ethical standards; consistently demonstrates integrity and alignment with company values
• Ability to motivate and develop teams while managing multiple priorities under tight deadlines
