Position Summary

The Coordinator of Career Advising & Professional Development provides direct career advising, career education, mentoring, and professional development support to Roosevelt University students. The coordinator maintains an active advising caseload, manages the Professional Mentoring Program ( PMP ) and day-to-day administration of the PeopleGrove platform, and serves as the Office of Career Services’ primary liaison to the College of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences ( CHESS ).

Working collaboratively with Career Services staff, faculty, alumni, employers, mentors, and other University partners, the coordinator delivers student-facing programs and resources that help undergraduate and graduate students build professional skills, networks, and connections to career opportunities.

Primary Location: Chicago Campus, with scheduled support for the Schaumburg Campus as needed.

The Coordinator of Career Advising & Professional Development will report to the Director of Career Services.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

A bachelor’s degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling or related field.

A minimum of 5 years experience working in higher education administration, preferably in a career services or student support capacity.

Proven ability to develop and deliver objectives of programs and services for the department.

Excellent organizational, communication (written and verbal), interpersonal skills and attention to detail.

Ability to exercise considerable judgment and discretion in establishing and maintaining good working relationships.

Ability to demonstrate a commitment to service excellence by embodying Roosevelt’s core values, mission, and vision in every aspect of the role working with students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

A positive and professional demeanor is a must.

Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, and Outlook.

  • Relevant professional experience in career services, higher education, student affairs, advising, mentoring, professional development, workforce development, or a related area.
  • Experience working directly with college students or similar populations and providing advising, coaching, mentoring, career development, or related support.
  • Experience developing or facilitating workshops, presentations, programs, or educational experiences.
  • Strong written, verbal, interpersonal, presentation, organizational, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to independently manage assigned responsibilities and multiple priorities while working collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, alumni, employers, mentors, and other partners

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling, education, organizational leadership, psychology, social sciences, business, or a related field.
  • Experience providing career advising or career coaching in a college or university setting.
  • Experience managing or supporting a professional mentoring program and delivering career education or professional development programming.
  • Knowledge of the NACE Career Readiness Competencies.
  • Experience using Handshake, PeopleGrove, or comparable career management, mentoring, or professional networking platforms.

  • Experience with program assessment, participation tracking, or data reporting.

Essential Job Functions

Career Advising & Student Career Development

The coordinator serves as one of the Office of Career Services’ primary providers of direct career advising and maintains an active student advising caseload.

Responsibilities include
  • Provide individual career advising and coaching to undergraduate and graduate students on career and major exploration, career planning, résumés and cover letters, interviewing, job and internship searches, networking, LinkedIn, professional branding, and graduate or professional school preparation.
  • Help students identify and communicate transferable and career-ready skills developed through academic, employment, internship, leadership, student organization, volunteer, and other experiences.
  • Assist students with career action planning, career fair preparation, employer interactions, and identifying appropriate next steps toward their professional goals.
  • Connect students with relevant Career Services resources, programs, employers, alumni, mentors, technology, and professional opportunities.
  • Maintain accurate advising notes and appointment records in Handshake and provide appropriate follow-up support and referrals.
  • Participate in drop-in advising, résumé reviews, career labs, and other direct student-support initiatives.
  • Provide scheduled career advising and programming at the Schaumburg Campus as needed.
Professional Mentoring Program & PeopleGrove

The coordinator manages the Professional Mentoring Program and serves as the primary day-to-day administrator of the PeopleGrove platform.

Responsibilities include
  • Manage the annual Professional Mentoring Program lifecycle, including recruitment, applications, mentor and mentee matching, orientation, participant communication, engagement, troubleshooting, and program completion.
  • Support the recruitment and engagement of alumni and professionals serving as mentors in collaboration with appropriate University partners.
  • Develop resources, programs, and networking opportunities that support productive mentor and mentee relationships.
  • Monitor participation and mentoring relationships, maintain program records, collect feedback, and recommend improvements based on program outcomes.
  • Manage day-to-day PeopleGrove administration, including mentoring workflows, user onboarding, groups and communities, resources, communications, and program information.
  • Provide routine user support and assist students, alumni, mentors, and other approved users with navigating the platform.
  • Develop and coordinate communications and engagement activities that encourage participation in PeopleGrove and mentoring initiatives.
  • Monitor platform engagement and prepare basic participation and usage reports.
  • Coordinate with appropriate University partners and vendor support when technical or administrative issues require additional assistance.
Career Education & Professional Development
Responsibilities include
  • Facilitate career education and professional development workshops, classroom presentations, career labs, and other student-facing programs.
  • Deliver programming that prepares students for internships, employment, networking, interviewing, job searching, professional communication, workplace expectations, and other aspects of career development.
  • Reinforce the NACE Career Readiness Competencies through advising, workshops, mentoring, and other student-facing activities.
  • Help students identify and communicate career-ready and transferable skills gained through academic, employment, leadership, mentoring, and co-curricular experiences.
  • Coordinate career education activities with faculty and academic departments, with particular attention to CHESS students and programs.
  • Support employer-, alumni-, and mentor-led workshops, panels, networking opportunities, and professional development programs.
  • Maintain and share career education resources and promote Career Services programs through Handshake, PeopleGrove, faculty partnerships, and other approved communication channels.
  • Support office-wide career readiness initiatives and collect participation information and feedback to support program improvement.
CHESS Liaison
Responsibilities include
  • Serve as the primary Career Services contact for CHESS students, faculty, staff, and academic leadership.
  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with CHESS faculty and departments and develop an understanding of the career needs and professional pathways associated with CHESS academic programs.
  • Provide and coordinate career advising, classroom presentations, workshops, and professional development programming responsive to CHESS student needs.
  • Share relevant internships, employment opportunities, mentoring programs, employer events, and Career Services resources with CHESS students and faculty.
  • Connect CHESS students and faculty with appropriate employers, alumni, mentors, professional organizations, and Career Services resources.
  • Collaborate with faculty to help students connect academic learning and transferable skills with career and professional opportunities.
  • Participate in appropriate CHESS meetings and initiatives and communicate identified career needs and opportunities to the Career Services team.
Assessment, Operations & Department Support
Responsibilities include
  • Track advising appointments, program participation, mentoring engagement, and other assigned activities and maintain accurate records.
  • Collect feedback and assist with assessment of advising, mentoring, PeopleGrove, and professional development activities.
  • Prepare basic reports and use participation data and feedback to recommend improvements within assigned areas.
  • Participate in Career Services planning, staff meetings, training, and office-wide programs and events.
  • Support departmental priorities, special projects, and other related duties consistent with the scope and level of the position.
