Job summary

City of Lake Charles seeks a Coordinator, Community Center II to oversee a large multipurpose recreation center and outdoor facilities, including athletic sports fields, playgrounds, and picnic areas. You will be in charge of the center's operation under policies set by the superintendent.

The role requires planning, supervising, and directing a variety of recreational and athletic programs, and coordinating staff and volunteers.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree (B. A.) in Recreation or Physical Education; and one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education or experience.
• Must possess a valid Louisiana Driver's License.

Responsibilities

• Plan, supervise, and direct recreational, athletic, art, craft, games and other programs.
• Provide patrons with technical instruction in these activities.
• Direct activities of assigned workers while maintaining order and discipline.

SUMMARY

Under general supervision, this individual is responsible for the operation of a large multipurpose recreation center and outdoor facilities, including athletic sports fields, playgrounds, and picnic areas. The coordinator is in full charge of the center, subject to policies established by the superintendent, and directs its total operation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Plan, supervise, and direct recreational, athletic, art, craft, games and other programs. Provide patrons with technical instruction and in these activities.

Direct activities of assigned workers while maintaining order and discipline. Attend monthly playground and facility inspection checklist.

Attend monthly safety meetings.

Initiate requests for recreation and athletic equipment; and maintain and perform repair work as required.

Perform monthly playground and facility inspection checklist. Schedule and supervise the use of facilities by participant groups. Inventory equipment.

Maintain accurate time and work records, and to submit various reports.

Perform any other duties as assigned. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

At any given time, may directly supervise ten employees and/or volunteers at the

recreation center. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to plan, promote, direct and supervise comprehensive recreation programs for a multipurpose community recreation center, without close or continuous supervision.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from a four-year college or university with major course work in Recreation or Physical Education; and one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education or experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Must possess a valid Louisiana Driver's License.
