Job summary

Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary is seeking an experienced cook for a per diem role on the Food and Nutrition Services team. The position supports patient, staff, and visitor meals and serves as a team lead during assigned shifts.

Work hours are every other weekend, 6:00 AM–5:30 PM, onsite at 243-245 Charles Street, Boston. The role emphasizes food quality, safety, sanitation and collaboration within a fast-paced kitchen environment.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required.
  • 5-7 years of cook experience required.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.
  • Safely use cleaning equipment and supplies.
  • Prepare and bake a variety of pastries, rolls and/or other baked goods.
  • Skill in cooking and preparing a variety of foods.
  • Knowledge of food preparation methods, quality standards.
  • Organizing and coordinating skills.
  • Ability to receive goods and supplies.
  • Knowledge of ordering and inventory control.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a team lead during assigned shifts and help ensure daily kitchen operations run smoothly.
  • Review daily production schedules to determine food requirements and quantities.
  • Gather ingredients, supplies, equipment, and utensils for daily cooking activities.
  • Prepare, season, and cook a wide variety of foods using multiple methods.
  • Follow standardized recipes, portioning guidelines, and production schedules.
  • Prepare meals for special diets per prescribed standards.
  • Monitor food quality, temperature, texture, and appearance throughout cooking.
  • Complete production sheets and temperature logs accurately and timely.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and sanitary work areas per food safety standards.
  • Identify spoiled items and communicate issues; report equipment problems.
  • Monitor inventory and assist with ordering/replenishment.
  • Assist with catering and special events as required.
  • Promote a positive, collaborative, service-focused environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
