Job description

Cook I (Partial Year)

Position in the new Dining Commons at the University of Georgia. The selected incumbent will be required to sign a partial year agreement. Employees returning to work from designated partial‑year leave periods are continued in the same position with no break in service and no change in the original hire date.

Responsibilities
  • Prepares a wide variety of meats, fowl, fish, and vegetables for lunch and dinner.
  • Prepares dishes including eggs, bacon, hot cereal, stews, soufflés, and similar courses.
  • Operates standard cooking equipment such as mixing machines, steam cookers, toasters, food choppers, refrigerators, baking ovens, and stoves.
  • Supervises and participates in cleaning kitchens, refrigerators, and storerooms; instructs and leads workers assisting in the preparation of food.
  • Completes computerized production sheets in a neat and timely manner.
  • Performs related work as assigned by management.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Considerable knowledge of materials, methods, and equipment used in large‑scale food preparation.
  • Knowledge of health hazards in food preparation.
  • Ability to read, write, and perform basic math skills.
  • Successful completion of a department‑sponsored food safety training program within 6 months of hire.
Physical Demands
  • Move loads up to 50 lbs.; unload and stock products; push or pull items weighing up to 30 lbs.
  • Perform duties with repetitive motion of wrists, arm, and shoulder; hand and finger coordination required.
  • Reach, climb, balance, crouch, twist, crawl, and kneel as needed.
  • Work in noisy, hot or cold environments with cleaning chemicals, equipment, dust, fumes, and odors.
  • Work extended hours standing.
Position Information

Title: Cook I (Partial Year). FLSA Non‑Exempt. FTE: 1.00. Hours: 40 per week; may include nights and weekends. Salary: $17.523077 per hour. Schedule: 9–11 months of each year. Benefits: Eligible for full benefits. Location: Athens Area. Posting date: 03/04/2026. Closing date: 05/26/2026 (scheduled start).
