Salary/Grade: $15.00 per hour / Grade 73, Non-Exempt

Position Overview

Under the supervision of the Office Manager, the Cook employee is responsible for maintaining the kitchen and multipurpose room within the Corps in keeping it in orderly and functional operation along with the center premises and its equipment in a clean, safe, healthy and comfortable condition inside and outside. The employee will be required to plan, cook and serve meals through our Soup Kitchen Program.

Responsibilities
  • Follows individual work schedule provided by the Office Manager to indicate specific responsibilities and the time scheduled for them.
  • Cooperates in total staff effort designed to improve centers service.
  • Participates in periodic individual conferences and regular staff meetings as scheduled by the Corps Officers/Office Manager. Meetings are held when changes are planned in any Corps programs, which affects the cook so that discussions and suggestions for improving the services may be shared among the director and staff. Such meetings will also be called when policy changes are to be made affecting budgetary needs for food and supplies or rearrangement of space. Participation in staff/volunteer gatherings and attendance in program meetings are also encouraged but not required, as a means of promoting a feeling of staff unity and providing opportunities for information exchange of information between volunteers and staff.
  • Maintain Cleaning checklist.
  • Sweep and mop floors of kitchen daily so they are kept in a clean and sanitary condition.
  • Maintain an inventory list of kitchen supplies and inform the Office Manager on a weekly basis of supplies that need to be ordered.
  • Clean and maintain function of all equipment within kitchen.
  • Responsible for monthly planning of menus and if necessary, communicating with the Office Manager about any food that needs to be ordered.
  • Clean walls and all surfaces of kitchen.
  • Weekly and tri-monthly cleaning of range hood, if any, and its parts as required by the City Division of Fire Prevention.
  • Assists with additional food services as needed.
  • Other related duties as assigned, consistent with the above as well as other programmatic duties.
Qualifications

You must have a high school diploma and a current ServSafe certification. You must be able to lift and carry at least 40 pounds. Must have 1 to 3 years of successful work experience in this field, and the ability to manage all operations of a kitchen efficiently while working pleasantly and compassionately with all types of people. You must be able to obtain clearances required by the Joseph R. Biden III and the Child Protection Act. Must have an understanding of and appreciation for the Mission of The Salvation Army.
