Job description

The cook is responsible for preparing foods that meet nutritional and dietary requirements set forth by the respective County Health Departments, PA State Health Department and the Department of Children and Youth Services. Maintain inventories and temperature logs of all foods stored, purchased, donated by USDA or FOOD BANK. Clean all work related equipment and pots and pans inside and outside in accordance with Food Safety and PA Health Department.

Responsibilities
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Implement procedures to maintain a healthy, comfortable and pleasant environment at the Meal Center
  • Knowledge of health, safety, and food service codes
  • Plan monthly menus incorporating USDA, Food Bank and purchased food items
  • Maintain inventories and temperature logs of all foods stored, purchased, donated by USDA or FOOD BANK
  • Clean all work related equipment and pots and pans inside and outside in accordance with Food Safety and PA Health Department
  • Keep all floors in kitchen, walk-in freezer/refrigerator, food storage rooms, swept and clean in preparation for heavy mopping and sanitizing
  • Replenish all condiments and utensils (sugar, pepper, salt, napkins, ice, drinks) as needed and maintain a clean environment in kitchen and dining room
  • Evaluate services and recommend necessary changes
  • Keep kitchen and food storage areas clean and free from rubbish
  • Rotate stock in food pantry and meal center, including cold and dry storage
  • Work independently and adapt work schedules to accommodate program needs
  • Maintain a neat and professional appearance
  • Lead and direct other kitchen workers such as community services workers and volunteers
  • Work well with other employees and maintain confidentiality
  • Order necessary supplies in consultation with Corps Officer
  • Other duties as assigned by the Corps Officer
Qualifications
  • High School Graduate or G.E.D. equivalent with one year cooking experience
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision
  • Must provide resume and be willing to have an interview
  • Non-expired Health Department Food Certification or ability to obtain
  • Ability to pass Serve Safe training
  • All three PA Clearances required upon employment and thereafter upon renewal: PA Child Abuse History Clearance, Criminal Record Request, and fingerprint-based federal criminal history
  • PA Mandated and Permissive Reporting and The Salvation Army's KeepSAfe training required
  • Proficient in Food Safety and PA Health Department regulations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
