About This Position

This position is based inside a jail/correctional facility at the Wake County Detention Center.

The Cook is responsible for accurately and efficiently preparing a variety of food items following work instructions, menus, and safety guidelines. The role requires experience in preparing hot and cold foods, knowledge of food safety, and the ability to multitask and remain calm under pressure. Good communication and adherence to recipes and standards are essential.

Core Responsibilities

• Follow daily prep lists and complete checklists
• Set up workstation with ingredients and equipment
• Use kitchen utensils and equipment safely
• Follow portion sizes, recipes, and safety standards
• Properly handle, store, and rotate food products
• Stock and maintain food line levels
• Understand menu items and prep ingredients accordingly
• Handle hot and cold food preparation tasks
• Perform physical tasks such as lifting and standing for long periods
• Perform additional duties as assigned

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or Equivalent; at least 18 years old
• Minimum one year of relevant cooking experience
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
• Experience in large-volume food service is a plus
• Knowledge of safety procedures in food service
