Job summary

NC State Dining is seeking a Cook to join the Case Dining Hall culinary team in Raleigh. You’ll handle recipe execution, station workflows, and ensure fresh, safely prepared meals for the campus community.

The role emphasizes teamwork, food safety, and reliable, timely service, with a schedule that may include nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Master the Menu: execute standard recipes and keep stations stocked.
  • Inventory & Logistics: requisition and move food supplies to keep production flowing.
  • Teamwork & Flow: coordinate kitchen to guest service with front-of-house.
  • Tech & Data: enter data into the Netmenu food production system when needed.
  • Kitchen Cleanliness: maintain sanitation and delegate cleaning tasks.
  • Lead by Example: assign tasks and direct student and temporary staff.

NC State Dining provides campus wide food services to students, staff, and faculty on the North Carolina State University Campus. NC State Dining operates 10 cafes, 3 food courts and 6 dining halls, 4 markets, 1 restaurant, vending, a nutritional counseling service, and a catering department. The department employs approximately 1000 temporary and student employees and approximately 190 permanent EHRA and SHRA employees.

Essential Job Duties

Are you passionate about food, teamwork, and fueling the next generation of leaders, innovators, and thinkers? NC State Dining is looking for an energetic and reliable Cook to join our culinary team in the Case Dining Hall. In this role, you won’t just be prepping food—you’ll be a vital part of the campus experience, ensuring our community enjoys fresh, delicious, and safely prepared meals every day. As a Cook, you will handle everything from recipe execution to leading station workflows. Your daily duties will include:

  • Master the Menu: Execute standard and routine recipes with precision to fulfill daily menus and keep our food stations stocked and looking great.
  • Inventory & Logistics: Requisition the products you need, and help check in, store, and move food supplies to keep production running smoothly.
  • Teamwork & Flow: Partner with front-of-house staff to coordinate a seamless flow of food from the kitchen to our guests, keeping track of food levels for timely service.
  • Tech & Data: Step up in the absence of a supervising chef by entering necessary data into our Netmenu food production system.
  • Kitchen Cleanliness: Maintain top-tier sanitation by cleaning utensils, workstations, tables, shelves, and equipment—and help delegate cleaning tasks to the back-of-house team.
  • Lead by Example: Ensure daily prep lists are completed and products are properly rotated. You’ll also help assign tasks and direct the efforts of food service technicians, temporary staff, and student employees.

Minimum Experience/Education

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Some positions may require certification by the Department of Correction.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Basic culinary and knife skills, including an understanding of culinary terms and practical application.
  • Culinary experience in fine dining, fast casual, multi-unit restaurants, or college/university settings.
  • Previous team leadership experience.
  • Proficiency with computers and the ability to learn and use email.
  • Allergen awareness and training.

  • ServSafe certification or the ability to obtain within 90 days of employment, and must be maintained as a condition of employment.
