Job summary

Nelson Connects is seeking a dedicated cook to prepare nutritious meals for individuals experiencing homelessness and to support shelter programs. You will ensure food safety, assist with menu prep, manage inventory, and coordinate with staff while driving to various sites to deliver meals.

• At least one year of food prep or cooking experience in a restaurant or group setting.
• Understanding of and sensitivity to the needs of homeless, low-income, mentally disabled, and chemically dependent individuals; lived experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Cook daily meals and assist with menu prep.
• Ensure proper food safety and sanitation; wash dishes and maintain a clean kitchen and storage areas.
• Assist with inventory management, program statistics, and coordination with shelter staff.
• Drive agency vehicle to deliver meals to various sites.
• Host and serve Community Meals, including setup/breakdown, directing volunteers, serving food, and light janitorial tasks.
• Participate in trainings and meetings.
• Promote a safe, healthy, and clean working environment.
• Perform other tasks as assigned under supervision of the Program Manager.

This Position Pays:
$25 – $25

What You Will Be Doing:

• Assist with inventory management, program statistics, and coordination with shelter staff.
• Drive agency vehicle to deliver meals to various sites.

What You Bring:

• CA Food Handler’s Certification (or ability to obtain) and CPR/First Aid Training.
• At least one year of food prep or cooking experience in a restaurant or group setting.
• Understanding of and sensitivity to the needs of homeless, low-income, mentally disabled, and chemically dependent individuals; lived experience preferred.
• Ability to interact professionally and supportively with diverse staff and participants.
• Strong interpersonal, crisis intervention, written, and oral communication skills.
• Ability to drive frequently, lift up to 50 lbs., and maintain physical stamina required for the role.
• Valid California driver’s license, ability to maintain insurability, TB clearance, and criminal records clearance.
