Job summary

Carlex Glass America, LLC in Indiana is seeking an experienced Controls Engineer to support production by programming and troubleshooting PLCs and robotic systems in a plant environment.

The role demands hands-on wiring, problem solving, and collaboration with maintenance and production teams to optimize line performance and achieve quality targets. Travel to sister plants may be required; knowledge of Siemens S7, Fanuc, ABB and Cognex systems is highly valued.

Qualifications

• BSEE or BSME required.
• 3–5 years programming/troubleshooting PLCs and robots.
• Strong knowledge of Siemens S7 and Fanuc/ABB robotics.
• Experience reading electrical prints and wiring industrial controls.

Responsibilities

• Support production by troubleshooting and programming plant automation equipment.
• Program and design PLC controls for new and existing systems.
• Travel to sister plants as needed for core functions.
• Maintain project schedules across multiple plant projects.
• Program robots and refine touchpoints to support production needs.
• Work with operations to optimize line flow and quality through programming changes.
• Assist in preventative maintenance planning and develop new plant technologies.
• Train plant technicians and engineers on controls skills.
• Create and update electrical drawings for equipment.

Essential Job Functions

• Support production by troubleshooting and programming existing and new plant automation equipment
• Program and design new and existing PLC controls
• Travel to sister plants as needed for completion of core job functions
• Maintain accurate and consistent schedules for projects and tasks for multiple plant projects
• Programming of robots and touching up points as needed to support production needs
• Working with production and process to optimize line flow, cycle time issues and quality concerns through changes in programming or troubleshooting of controls
• Help plan preventative maintenance plans for equipment in the plant both new and current
• Work to help develop new technology for the plant to utilize in efforts to improve cycle times and quality detection / prevention systems
• Help train plant techs and engineers on controls related skills
• Create and correct plant electrical drawings for equipment
• Work with plant teams to help develop accurate quoting models

Key Competencies

• Advanced/Intermediate skill level with Microsoft Office Suite; Word, Excel, and PowerPointExcellent Analytical Skills
• Ability to use RS Net Worx software, RS View Studio and Panel Builder software
• Ability to perform electrical troubleshooting and read electrical prints
• Ability to wire industrial control systems including 480V/120V/24V power, drives, motors, I/O and sensors
• Ability to design, diagnose, and troubleshoot vision applications
• Ability to connect to PLC and navigate programming software
• Hands-on approach to problem solving and analysis.

Requirements

• Years of Experience: 3 – 5 Years of experience programming and troubleshooting PLCs and Robots
• 1-3 Years of Siemens S7 programming experience a plus
• Other Requirements:
• Regular and predictable attendance required
• High level of understanding of Fanuc Robots and ABB robot operations
• Demonstrated understanding of Ethernet cabling and addressing, Device Net, RIO, and wireless PC networking
• Understanding of basic concepts of MMIs, familiar with PanelView Plus and PanelView hardware
• Demonstrated understanding of Cognex In-Sight software
• Demonstrated knowledge of ladder logic programming, PLC 5, SLC500, ControlLogix, MicroLogix, RIO, Ethernet I/P, DeviceNet
• Demonstrated understanding of AC and DC motors and servo systems
• Working knowledge of Kinetix, Ultra3000, PowerFlex, 1305 and 1338 drives
• Valid driver’s license required for business travel
• Work beyond the traditional 40 hours per week may be required

• BSEE or BSME Degree required
