The Controller is responsible for providing strategic financial leadership and oversight of all accounting and financial operations for a regional construction company with approximately $50 million in annual revenue, based in Doral, FL. This role partners closely with ownership and senior leadership to ensure accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, cash management, and data-driven decision support in a project-based construction environment. This is a full-time, on-site position requiring five days per week in the Doral office. Base salary range is $140,000 to $160,000 per year.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as the primary financial leader and trusted advisor to ownership and senior management on all accounting, financial reporting, and operational finance matters
- Oversee the full accounting function, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, job costing, and fixed assets
- Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP, including balance sheet, income statement, cash flow, and work-in-progress (WIP) schedules
- Manage job cost accounting, project profitability analysis, percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, and cost-to-complete forecasting for construction projects
- Develop and maintain strong internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures to safeguard company assets and ensure compliance
- Lead the annual budget process, forecasting, and variance analysis; partner with operations and project managers to drive financial accountability
- Oversee cash flow management, banking relationships, and working capital optimization
- Coordinate and support the annual external audit, tax preparation, and any required governmental or bonding company reporting
- Supervise and develop accounting staff; ensure accurate and timely processing of all financial transactions and month-end close
- Analyze financial data and present clear insights and recommendations to leadership to support business decisions and operational improvements
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax requirements, as well as construction industry regulations and bonding/insurance requirements
- Maintain integrity of the accounting system and related data; implement process improvements and system enhancements as needed
- Partner with project managers and field leadership on job cost reviews, change order tracking, and billing accuracy
Requirements:
- Minimum of 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 4+ years in a Controller, Assistant Controller, or senior accounting leadership role
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA strongly preferred
- Industry-relevant experience within the Construction industry preferred, but not required
- Strong knowledge of job costing, percentage-of-completion accounting, WIP schedules, and project-based financial management highly preferred
- Hands-on experience managing full-cycle accounting operations for a company of similar size ($30M–$100M revenue range preferred)
- Advanced proficiency in Excel and experience with construction-focused accounting software (e.g., Viewpoint, Foundation, Sage 300 CRE, or similar)
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, and financial reporting requirements
- Demonstrated ability to partner effectively with non-financial leaders, including project managers and field operations
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills with high attention to detail
- Experience supervising and developing accounting staff
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment with multiple competing priorities
