Job summary

TheASPTeam is assisting a Kent, WA construction-focused company with a hands-on Controller role. You will lead accounting operations, mentor staff, and partner with ownership to drive financial strategy.

The ideal candidate has 10+ years of progressive accounting experience in construction, strong GAAP knowledge, and proven leadership. You will own budgeting, job costing, WIP reporting, audits, cash flow, and internal controls while ensuring timely financial reporting.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including significant construction accounting experience required.
  • Minimum 5 years of accounting leadership or management experience.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and construction accounting principles.
  • Experience with: Job costing, Work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, Percentage-of-completion accounting, Construction contracts, Cash flow management, Budgeting and forecasting.
  • Experience with accounting software in a construction environment.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Lead all day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets, and cash management.
  • Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Oversee month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Manage construction job costing and ensure accurate project cost reporting.
  • Prepare and analyze Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and revenue recognition.
  • Monitor project profitability and provide financial analysis to executive leadership.
  • Develop and maintain annual budgets, forecasts, and cash flow projections.
  • Oversee banking relationships, financing activities, and treasury management.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Coordinate annual financial audits and tax preparation with outside CPA firms.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal accounting controls and financial policies.
  • Oversee payroll processes, including prevailing wage, certified payroll, union reporting, and benefit contributions.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff while fostering a collaborative team environment.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, automation, and operational efficiencies.
  • Prepare financial reports and analyses for ownership and executive leadership.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

The Controller is responsible for directing all accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, cash management, internal controls, and compliance activities for the company.
