Job summary

CooperDouglas is seeking a Controller in San Pedro to own the accounting function end-to-end. You will lead financial reporting, audits, internal controls, and manage a growing accounting team while collaborating with the CFO.

The role requires a strong GAAP background, extensive audit experience, and the ability to work onsite daily in Southern California. This is a direct hire with a competitive base salary and comprehensive benefits.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or higher in accounting, finance or a related field.
• 10+ years of progressive accounting experience in construction or LIHTC.
• Proven audit ownership from planning to completion.
• Experience designing and implementing internal controls for multi-entity structures.
• Strong GAAP knowledge and ability to lead audits.

Responsibilities

• Lead monthly, quarterly and annual financial reporting for multi-entity portfolio.
• Own the annual audit end-to-end and liaise with external auditors.
• Build and enforce internal controls and accounting policies.
• Oversee AP, revenue recognition, treasury, cash flow, payroll and GL.
• Partner with third-party property accounting firms for portfolio oversights.
• Ensure compliance with 1099s, state tax filings and housing program requirements.
• Lead and develop a team of accountants including Senior and Corporate Accounting Manager.

Job description

CooperDouglas is working with a well-established construction company headquartered in San Pedro, with projects across Southern California, to find their next Controller. Reporting directly to the CFO, the Controller will own the accounting function from end to end, covering financial reporting, audits, internal controls and leading the accounting team.

What You'll Do

• Lead monthly, quarterly and annual financial reporting across a multi-entity portfolio of partnerships, joint ventures and corporate entities.
• Run the annual audit from start to finish, including planning, timelines, deliverables and the relationship with the outside auditors.
• Build, strengthen and enforce internal controls and accounting policies in line with GAAP.
• Oversee AP, revenue recognition, treasury, cash flow, payroll and the general ledger.
• Partner with the third-party property accounting firms that manage the books for parts of the portfolio.
• Ensure compliance with 1099 reporting, business tax filings, California franchise tax and government housing program requirements.
• Lead and grow a team of Property Accountants, a Senior Accountant and a Corporate Accounting Manager by setting goals, reviewing performance and building skills.
• Act as the CFO's go-to resource on all accounting matters, giving leadership financial analysis, policy recommendations and strategic guidance.
• Manage reporting and system administration across MRI and RealPage.

What You'll Bring

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field.
• 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including required experience in construction, homebuilding, general contracting or LIHTC.
• Strong GAAP knowledge and a track record of owning audits from start to finish.
• Proven ability to hire, coach and develop a high-performing accounting team.
• Experience designing and implementing internal controls across complex, multi-entity structures.
• Experience with Foundation, MRI or Procore is a big plus.
• Sharp analytical skills and the ability to break down complex financial problems and recommend practical solutions.
• Ability to work onsite daily in San Pedro.

Compensation & Benefits (Direct Hire)

• Base salary of approximately $210,000
