Job summary

CFS, a well-established nonprofit, is seeking an experienced Controller to lead accounting and finance operations in California. This hands-on role requires strong leadership and a commitment to mission impact, with a focus on accurate financial reporting and compliance.

You will oversee month-end close, budgets, forecasts, and cash flow; ensure internal controls; coordinate audits; and partner with executives to drive strategic decisions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
• CPA preferred.
• Experience as Controller or senior accounting leader.
• Nonprofit accounting experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Oversee all accounting and financial operations for the organization.
• Lead month-end and year-end close processes and ensure timely, accurate financial reporting.
• Prepare and analyze financial statements, budgets, forecasts, and cash flow projections.
• Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, financial policies, and regulatory requirements.
• Oversee internal controls and support audit preparation and coordination.
• Partner with executive leadership to provide financial insights and support strategic decision-making.
• Monitor organizational financial performance and identify trends, risks, and opportunities.
• Lead, mentor, and develop accounting and finance team members.
• Collaborate with department leaders to support budgeting and financial planning initiatives.

Overview Of The Controller Role

• Oversee all accounting and financial operations for the organization

Preferred Qualifications For The Controller

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field

• Previous Controller, Assistant Controller, or senior-level accounting leadership experience
• Nonprofit accounting experience strongly preferred
• Strong knowledge of financial reporting, budgeting, internal controls, and audit processes
• Excellent leadership, analytical, and communication skills
