Job summary

The Controller position at People-US will oversee accounting activities for the CFO and accounting department, supporting nationwide programs and ensuring timely, accurate financial reporting.

Ideal candidates have nonprofit accounting experience, strong MS Office and SAGE Intaact skills, and a proven ability to lead staff, coordinate audits, and maintain rigorous internal controls in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

  • 7 years of nonprofit accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a management role.
  • In-depth understanding of MS Office Suite and SAGE Intaact.
  • Experience with FundEz preferred.
  • Bachelor's Degree in accounting or related field.
  • Knowledge of government contracts and Medicaid revenue cycles.
  • Ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proactive problem-solving with strong decision-making skills.
  • Executive-level communication with stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare financial statements, reports, forecasts, and annual budgets.
  • Supervise accounting staff across reporting, billing, payroll, and budgeting.
  • Delegate authority for receipt, disbursement, and funds custody.
  • Maintain internal controls and stay updated on policies and directives.
  • Coordinate audits to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Monitor cash flow and financial resources across departments.
  • Lead staff training in budgeting and financial management.
  • Develop relationships with banks and external accounting personnel.
  • Direct financial planning, budgeting, and investment activities.
  • Develop and enforce internal control policies for budgeting and cash management.

Job description

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 9 AM to 5 PM

Salary Range: $105,000 to $115,000 per year

JOB SUMMARY:

The Controller will manage accounting-related tasks for the CFO, accounting department, and organization. Staff should have a detailed understanding of the Microsoft Office Suite, be extremely fast at problem-solving, and have experience. This position is to support People USA programs in all counties.

JOB DUTIES:
  • Prepare or direct preparation of financial statements, business activity reports, financial position forecasts, annual budgets, or reports required by regulatory agencies.
  • Supervise employees performing financial reporting, accounting, billing, collections, payroll, and budgeting duties.
  • Delegate authority for the receipt, disbursement, banking, protection, and custody of funds, securities, and financial instruments.
  • Maintain current knowledge of organizational policies and procedures, federal and state policies and directives, and current accounting standards.
  • Conduct or coordinate audits of company accounts and financial transactions to ensure compliance with state and federal requirements and statutes.
  • Receive, record, and authorize requests for disbursements in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of accounting and other financial staff, recommending and implementing personnel actions, such as promotions and dismissals.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with banking, insurance, and external accounting personnel to facilitate financial activities.
  • Coordinate and direct the financial planning, budgeting, procurement, or investment activities of all or part of an organization.
  • Develop internal control policies, guidelines, and procedures for activities such as budget administration, cash and credit management, and accounting.
  • Analyze the financial details of past, present, and expected operations to identify development opportunities and areas where improvement is needed.
  • Advise management on short-term and long-term financial objectives, policies, and actions.
  • Provide direction and assistance to other organizational units regarding accounting and budgeting policies and procedures and efficient control and utilization of financial resources.
  • Evaluate needs for procurement of funds and investment of surpluses and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Lead staff training and development in budgeting and financial management areas.
  • Monitor financial activities and details, such as cash flow and reserve levels, to ensure that all legal and regulatory requirements are met.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
  • 7 years of experience in nonprofit accounting with at least 3 years of experience in a management role.
  • In-depth understanding of entire MS Office Suite. and SAGE Intaact.
  • Previous use of FundEz is preferred.
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Experience with accounting software transitions.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and adept at managing shifting priorities.
  • Knowledge of government contracts and Medicaid revenue cycles.
  • Must be able to meet deadlines in a fast-paced quickly changing environment.
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving with strong decision-making skills.
  • Executive Level communication skills (both verbal and written) with the ability to engage various stakeholders.
