Reports to: CFO

About the Opportunity

Flying Horse Capital is conducting this search on behalf of a longtime strategic partner—a private equity firm with which we have co-invested. Our partner shares our commitment to patient capital, operator-first partnerships and building durable businesses. Its typical hold period is five to seven years, with select businesses held longer term.

The firm’s portfolio company, a growing healthcare services business located between Chicago Heights and Plainfield, is seeking a hands-on Controller to lead its accounting function and own the financial close.

Role Overview

Reporting directly to the CFO, the Controller will oversee accounting operations, manage a small team and remain actively involved in the work. This leader will deliver accurate financial reporting, strengthen controls and build processes that support the company’s growth, allowing the CFO to focus on FP&A and strategic initiatives.

The Controller will also partner closely with the Director of Revenue Cycle Management to align accounting with billing and collections, improve reconciliations and provide greater visibility into revenue and cash flow.

This opportunity is well suited to a healthcare accounting leader who enjoys developing people, improving processes and working through the details in a growing organization.

Key Responsibilities

Accounting and Financial Reporting

  • Own the monthly, quarterly and annual close, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting.
  • Oversee general ledger accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, accruals and financial statement preparation.
  • Prepare and review monthly financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Manage patient service revenue recognition, contractual allowances, implicit price concessions and payer-level accounts receivable reporting.

Revenue Cycle Partnership

  • Partner with the Director of Revenue Cycle Management to reconcile billing and collections activity to the general ledger.
  • Improve visibility into payer balances, collection trends and cash flow.
  • Identify and resolve discrepancies between accounting records and electronic health record (EHR) or practice management systems.

Team Leadership and Process Improvement

  • Manage, mentor and develop the accounting team while remaining hands-on.
  • Strengthen accounting policies, internal controls and close procedures.
  • Identify system and process improvements that support a scalable finance function.

CFO, Sponsor and External Reporting

  • Partner with the CFO on reporting, budgeting, forecasting and strategic initiatives.
  • Support private equity reporting and respond to sponsor and lender information requests.
  • Coordinate annual audits, tax filings and relationships with external accounting providers.
Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or a related field.
  • Progressive accounting experience, including direct ownership of the month-end close.
  • Healthcare industry experience, including:
  • Accounting for contractual allowances, implicit price concessions and bad debt.
  • Experience in multi-payer environments, including Medicare, Medicaid, commercial insurance and self-pay.
  • Close collaboration with revenue cycle teams and familiarity with billing, coding and collections workflows.
  • Reconciliation of EHR or practice management system data to the general ledger.
  • Experience managing and developing accounting staff.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, reconciliations and internal controls.
  • Ability to lead the accounting function while remaining engaged in day-to-day details.
  • Strong communication, leadership and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Preferred

  • Big Four public accounting experience.
  • Experience in a private equity-backed or high-growth business.
Location and Compensation

The position follows a hybrid schedule of four days on-site and one day remote each week. The office is located in Chicago’s south/southwest suburbs, between Chicago Heights and Plainfield.

Compensation includes a $150,000 base salary plus an annual performance bonus.
