Qualifications

• 7+ years progressive accounting experience in a leadership role.
• Hands-on accounting with ability to perform work directly.
• Sales tax compliance and filing independently.
• Experience with Great Plains Dynamics or similar ERP/GL systems.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and multitasking skills.

Responsibilities

• Oversee day-to-day accounting operations including journal entries, reconciliations, month-end close, and general ledger activity.
• Prepare and review financial statements, management reports, and schedules.
• Perform bank reconciliations and resolve discrepancies.
• Oversee sales tax returns and compliance.
• Manage cost/inventory accounting and related reconciliations.
• Monitor expenses and overall financial results; provide insights to leadership.
• Ensure data accuracy across multiple accounting systems and external reports.
• Lead and support a small accounting team; assign work and guide staff.
• Collaborate with senior leadership on accounting and financial matters.
• Assist with budgeting, forecasting, cash management, and year-end activities.
• Identify opportunities to improve processes using technology/AI.

We are working with a privately held company seeking a hands-on Controller to oversee day-to-day accounting operations and financial reporting for a small, close-knit organization. This is a key accounting position for someone who enjoys being directly involved in the work while also providing leadership and oversight to a small accounting team.

The ideal candidate will have a strong technical accounting background, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to manage day-to-day accounting functions and the organization's broader financial reporting needs.

Responsibilities

• Manage the day-to-day accounting operations, including journal entries, account reconciliations, month-end close, and general ledger activity.
• Prepare and review financial statements, management reports, and supporting schedules.
• Perform bank reconciliations and investigate and resolve discrepancies.
• Prepare and file sales tax returns independently.
• Oversee cost accounting, inventory accounting, and related reconciliations.
• Monitor and analyze accounting activity, expenses, and financial results.
• Maintain accurate accounting records and ensure transactions are properly recorded.
• Work with multiple accounting systems and external reports to ensure data accuracy.
• Oversee accounts payable activities and work closely with the AP Accountant.
• Provide oversight and support to the royalty accounting team; prior royalty accounting experience is not required.
• Assist with budgeting, forecasting, cash management, and financial reporting.
• Support year-end accounting activities and work with outside accounting professionals as needed.
• Review and improve accounting processes and identify opportunities to use technology and AI to increase efficiency.
• Supervise and support a small accounting team, including assigning work and providing guidance as needed.
• Partner directly with senior leadership on accounting and financial matters.

Requirements

• 7+ years of progressive accounting experience
• Strong, hands-on accounting experience with a willingness to perform the work directly.
• Sales tax experience is required, including the ability to prepare and file returns independently.
• Experience working with ERP and accounting systems.
• Great Plains Dynamics experience is highly preferred; similar ERP/accounting systems experience will be considered.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities.
• Management or supervisory experience is preferred but not required.
• CPA is preferred but not required.
• Distribution or other inventory-based industry experience is a plus.
• Experience in a smaller or privately held organization is a plus.
• Comfortable using technology and exploring AI to improve accounting processes.
