Job summary

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 3–5 years of relevant nonprofit accounting experience preferred.
  • CPA designation is a plus.
  • Strong accounting skills: payroll, AP, AR, reconciliations, GL.

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Controller is responsible for the day-to-day finance and accounting operations of Bounce Innovation Hub, including bookkeeping, accounts payable, accounts receivable, banking, grant accounting, financial reporting, and internal controls. This hands‑on role supports accurate and timely financial information for management, the Board of Directors, grant funders, and other stakeholders. The Controller works collaboratively with staff across the organization and serves as a key partner to the CFO in budgeting, audit preparation, compliance, and continuous process improvement.

Job Duties:
Accounting & Reporting
  • Prepares, analyzes, and issues financial statements and related reports for management, the Board of Directors, grant funders, and other stakeholders.
  • Manages grant accounting including tracking restricted funds, recording grants receivable, and assisting with the preparation of grant budgets and monthly reimbursement requests.
  • Prepares, tracks, and reconciles ledgers and budgets with multiple programs and grants.
  • Collects, analyzes, and consolidates financial data.
  • Develops and streamlines operational efficiencies while maintaining strong internal controls.
  • Performs accounting operations in collaboration with the CFO, including day-to-day management of accounts payable and accounts receivable, preparation and posting of receipts, deposits, purchase orders, invoices, refunds, and other standard bookkeeping tasks.
  • Coordinates and manages procurement activities
  • Oversees day-to-day banking and bank accounts, including making bank deposits as needed and performing account reconciliations.
  • Assists the CFO in producing the annual budget and forecasts by working with all departmental teams.
  • Prepares monthly rental invoices in collaboration with the Program and Place teams.
  • Reviews and approves all invoices submitted for payment through the Bill.com platform.
  • Manages and completes the annual financial statement audit or financial review process in coordination with the CFO and external advisors.
  • Designs, documents, and maintains strong internal controls and accounting procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable financial rules, regulations, grant requirements, and internal policies.
  • Compiles information for the filing of the organization’s tax documents, including Forms 990 and 1099.
Payroll, Banking & Procurement
  • Handles and processes expense reports.
  • Coordinates and manages procurement activities
Skills & Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, plus at least 3‑5 years of relevant experience; nonprofit accounting experience and knowledge of GAAP as it applies to nonprofit organizations preferred. Certified Public Accountant designation is a plus.
  • Strong accounting skills, including payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, and general ledger accounting.
  • Strong understanding of and experience in grants accounting, government grant compliance and federal financial regulations, including 2 CFR 200, preferred.
  • High ethics, integrity, and accountability.
  • Strong collaboration, organizational, analytical, and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, as well as Adobe, QuickBooks, Bill.com, and related accounting systems.
  • Self-starter capable of thriving in a small, dynamic team environment, with the ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Familiarity and passion for work that supports startups and the entrepreneurial community.
Physical Demands:
  • This role primarily operates in a professional office environment and requires the ability to work at a computer for extended periods, communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, and occasionally move office materials weighing up to 15 pounds.

This is a full-time, exempt position based at Bounce Innovation Hub in Akron, Ohio.Salary for this position is $78,000 per year.
