Job description

BMS Controls Technician III, PLC and Ignition

Salary: $130,000 to $160,000 base, plus bonus and a controls profit-share that has been paying above target

Schedule: Full time, on site, with regional travel across the Pacific Northwest

This one is for a controls technician with real PLC and Ignition experience who wants to be the person a site depends on rather than one of twenty engineers on a rota.

You would join the controls group of a national facilities and energy business, supporting data center project and service work in eastern Oregon. The job is independent commissioning, startup and troubleshooting of live control systems. Right now the company flies engineers in to cover this work, and the whole point of the role is to build the capability locally so that stops. Success is measured on cutting that fly-in support by more than half within six months, which tells you how much autonomy comes with it.

The hiring company is a mid-sized business, headquartered in Texas with offices from Massachusetts to Washington, working across energy management, building envelope, lighting, HVAC and building automation. The controls group is the fastest growing part of it, driven by data center demand, and it is moving its platform stack toward Ignition. They have hired a dedicated training manager to bring technicians across from adjacent backgrounds.

What you'll do

You will work hands-on with PLC systems and Ignition environments, commissioning, starting up and troubleshooting live systems on site. This is field work rather than desk work, so expect standing, walking, climbing ladders, working in mechanical spaces and lifting up to 50 lbs.

The work covers data center project support and ongoing service needs. There is regional travel across the Pacific Northwest, and extended or non-standard hours when a project demands it.

Over time you become the local technical authority for the site, which means you are the one making the calls rather than waiting for someone to fly in and make them for you.

What you'll need

You will want around five years of hands-on controls field experience with genuine independent commissioning behind you, strong practical PLC systems experience, and the ability to work in Ignition environments. If your background is industrial automation rather than building controls, that is not a problem here, it is the point. This role was written for a PLC and SCADA person.

Ignition Core certification is a strong advantage, and the exam will be sponsored if you do not hold it yet. Mission-critical or data center experience is valuable but not essential.

You will need US work authorization, a valid driver's license, and a genuine willingness to live within driving distance of Umatilla.

Why this role is worth considering

Most Ignition roles are integrator jobs where you are one of many on a project list. This one puts you on a site as the person who owns it, with a clear brief to make that site self-sufficient.

Reasons engineers join include:
  • Base of $130,000 to $160,000 with bonus potential
  • Company discretionary bonus targeting around 10%
  • A controls profit-share bonus targeting 10 to 15% that has exceeded target in recent years
  • Sponsored Ignition certification
  • Medical, dental and vision cover
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid time off, parental leave and disability cover
  • A dedicated training manager whose job is to bring people up to speed on new platforms
The working setup

Based in the Umatilla area of eastern Oregon, on site. You will need to be within driving distance, so relocation is likely unless you are already in the Tri-Cities, Hermiston, Pendleton or Walla Walla area. There is regional travel across Oregon and Washington, and hours flex around project demand.

The kind of person who will do well

This suits someone who is genuinely self-sufficient, who is comfortable being the most senior technical person on site, and who documents their work so others can follow it.

If you want a large team around you, a fully remote schedule, or a city posting, this will not be the right role. Umatilla is rural and the job is on site.

If you have hands-on PLC and Ignition experience and you want a site to own rather than a queue to work through, it is worth a conversation.
