Job summary

Orange County Sanitation District is seeking a Safety Inspector to monitor and enforce safety on capital improvement program (CIP) projects and maintenance construction work, ensuring all activities comply with OC San and Cal OSHA requirements.

Reporting to the Safety and Health Manager in Risk Management, the Inspector conducts regular site inspections, issues high-hazard permits, investigates incidents, and tracks corrective actions to minimize risk to workers and the public.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED with safety/inspection training.
• Five years of safety inspection experience on public works construction.
• Valid California Class C Driver’s license.
• CHST/ASP/OHST certification within 12 months of placement.

Responsibilities

• Conduct continuous safety inspections of construction sites to ensure OC San safety requirements and Cal/OSHA compliance.
• Provide and track annual contractor safety orientations.
• Coordinate with contractors and project teams to enforce safety and health rules.
• Serve as liaison to Construction Management and Maintenance teams to ensure safe project execution.
• Review contractor safety-related submittals.
• Issue high hazard work permits (e.g., hot work, confined space, crane lift).
• Investigate construction near misses, incidents, and accidents.
• Track, review, and ensure implementation of contractor corrective actions.
• Attend project planning and progress meetings.
• Stop work if unsafe practices or conditions are observed.
• Assist with contractor pre-qualification efforts.
• Maintain daily safety logs, inspection reports and meeting minutes.
• Identify areas for opportunity and enhancements to the contractor safety process.
