Job Description

PROJECT ENGINEER

MDG Design and Construction, an industry-leading affordable housing developer with over 35 years of experience, is seeking Project Engineers for our various affordable housing projects across NYC. The position is based in our main office in Woodbury, Long Island.

Our company specializes in all aspects of multifamily residential development, including construction, development, and design, with a focus on new construction and moderate rehabilitation of affordable apartment buildings nationwide.

Preconstruction Responsibilities
  1. Review original drawings and PNA reports used for scope development.
  2. Assess existing conditions from field surveys and determine systems requiring replacement.
  3. Prepare scope of work narratives based on restoration needs and budgets.
  4. Participate in selection of the design team and consultants.
  5. Develop timelines for SD, DD, and CD drawing sets and specifications.
  6. Maintain communication with the design team and consultants, including weekly meetings.
  7. Coordinate with manufacturers and engineers regarding constructability of new systems.
  8. Review construction documents and prepare detailed scope of work.
  9. Prepare trade scope of work and collaborate with the CA department for bidding.
  10. Participate in field visits with subcontractors to discuss scope and documents.
  11. Work with the development team to meet project milestones during preconstruction.
  12. Review environmental reports and coordinate with consultants and subcontractors.
  13. Review progress drawings, prepare RFIs, and ensure constructability.
  14. Review equipment schedules and ensure compliance with energy codes.
  15. Coordinate procurement activities, including take-offs and pricing.
  16. Review subcontractor bids for scope accuracy.
  17. Oversee DOB applications, inspections, and related documentation.
  18. Navigate NYC DOB, DEP, DOT regulations and websites.
  19. Conduct final review of construction documents before closing.
Construction & DOB Expediting Responsibilities
  1. Review submittals and shop drawings, coordinating with the CA team.
  2. Maintain construction schedules and material procurement timelines.
  3. Coordinate with expeditors on filing and permit approvals.
  4. Ensure permit logs and inspection reports are current.
  5. Secure Letters of Certification (LOC) for DOB applications.
  6. Monitor construction and payment schedules.
  7. Attend weekly construction meetings to address delays and deviations.
  8. Review and approve change order requests.
Leadership Responsibilities
  1. Lead high-performance teams through supervision, training, and mentoring.
  2. Create a positive and productive work environment.
  3. Demonstrate accountability and integrity; mentor staff accordingly.
Technical Skills
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam.
Knowledge & Skills
  • Experience in design review, bid analysis, scheduling, and logistics.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and prioritize tasks.
  • Proactive in supplier and subcontractor engagement.
  • Strong analytical and writing skills.
  • Familiarity with construction details, drawings, and costs.
  • Proficiency in take-offs, MS Project, Bluebeam, Procore, Proest, and estimating software.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information responsibly.
Education & Experience

BS or MS in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or Architecture with construction experience. Minimum of 5 years field experience. Additional experience in design, commissioning, NYC Energy Conservation Code, or building systems is preferred. Certifications such as EIT, PE, CSEP, PMP, or Green Building credentials are advantageous.
