Whitestone Associates, Inc. in Phillipsburg, NJ is seeking a Construction Materials Laboratory Technician to perform soil and concrete testing in our lab.

The role involves transporting samples from sites, preparing specimens, operating testing equipment, and recording results for engineers and project managers. The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma with interest in soils and materials testing, the ability to lift samples, and a valid driver's license.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Associate degree or higher in Civil Engineering, Geology, Construction Technology, or a related field preferred.
• Valid driver's license and a driving record that meets company requirements.
• Interest in soils, construction materials testing, and laboratory work.
• Ability to lift and move soil or concrete samples as required.

Responsibilities

• Retrieve and transport soil and/or concrete samples from project sites to our laboratory facility.
• Perform laboratory testing on concrete, soil, and construction materials per ASTM standards.
• Conduct soil testing including Atterberg limits, gradation, moisture, and Proctor tests.
• Prepare concrete cylinders for compressive strength testing and monitor curing.
• Operate laboratory equipment used for compression testing and materials prep.
• Document test results and maintain accurate lab records and logs.
• Keep the lab clean and organized and assist with equipment maintenance.
• Follow safety procedures and company standards during all lab activities.
• Perform occasional field testing of construction materials as needed.
• Assist with duties under the Laboratory Manager and coordinate with engineers and PMs.

Construction Materials Laboratory Technician

Key Responsibilities:

• Retrieve and transport soil and/or concrete samples from project sites and branch offices to our laboratory facility in Alpha, NJ;
• Perform laboratory testing on concrete, soil, and construction materials in accordance with established procedures, ASTM standards, and industry testing methodologies;
• Conduct laboratory testing of soils including Atterberg limits, gradation analyses, index testing, moisture content testing, standard and modified Proctor testing, and permeability testing;
• Receive, log, cure, and prepare concrete cylinders for compressive strength testing (concrete breaks);
• Monitor concrete sample curing conditions and maintain testing schedules;
• Operate laboratory equipment used for compression testing and materials preparation;
• Assist with construction materials testing, sample preparation, and documentation of test results for engineers and project managers;
• Maintain accurate laboratory records and testing logs;
• Maintain a clean and organized laboratory workspace and assist with routine maintenance of testing equipment;
• Follow established safety procedures and company standards during all laboratory activities;
• Perform field testing of construction materials (soils, concrete, and steel) on an occasional as-needed basis; and
• Perform other duties as assigned under the direction of the Laboratory Manager.

Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or equivalent required;
• Associate degree or higher in Civil Engineering, Geology, Construction Technology, or a related field preferred;
• Whitestone will provide a company vehicle for employees to perform the duties of this position. Employees must be at least 21 years of age to operate a company vehicle in accordance with company vehicle insurance requirements;
• Valid driver's license and a driving record that meets company requirements;
• Interest in soils, construction materials testing, and laboratory work;
• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow testing procedures accurately;
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
• Basic computer skills for data entry and reporting; and
• Ability to lift and move soil or concrete samples as required.

Preferred Certifications:

• Existing certifications related to construction materials testing are considered a plus. Certifications are not required for this position. Training and support for relevant industry certifications may be provided as experience is gained.

Higher compensation than the amount listed below may be offered commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Hourly Pay Range

$20 - $28 USD
