Job summary

State of Missouri's MoDOT seeks a construction inspector across multiple counties in the St. Louis area. Entry, intermediate, or senior levels are available with a clear career ladder.

You will inspect asphaltic and concrete work, manage base layers, bridges, and utility items, and perform field surveying, staking, and reporting. Strong math, drafting, and project-management skills are valued.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and perform construction inspections for compliance with contracts, specifications, and engineering principles.
• Inspect routine construction items including plants, paving, grading, bridges, culverts, and utilities.
• Prepare final plans, change orders, contractor payment estimates, and engineering costs.
• Maintain construction documentation, records, and reports; keep supervisor informed of activities or issues.
• Provide field checks for surveying operations and lead layout/staking.

What You’ll Do

• Coordinates and performs construction inspections verifying that contractors' activities are in compliance with contracts, specifications, and engineering principles.
• Performs duties of inspector in charge of routine construction items, such as asphaltic or portland cement concrete plants, asphaltic or concrete paving, including grading and base, small bridges, concrete box and pipe culverts; inspects general or special items, such as utility adjustments, signing, traffic signals and lighting.
• Performs measurements, computations, or other work in preparing final plans, change orders, contractor payment estimates, and engineering costs.
• Maintains required construction documentation, records and files; prepares progress and other reports, keeps supervisor fully informed as to activities or unusual conditions on the job.
• Provides field checks for contractor surveying operations; serves as party chief on routine layout and staking; serves as instrument operator on staking of large bridges, other critical structures, or complex interchanges.

• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university curriculum.

• Successful completion of a work simulation examination and a medical-physical examination.

Successful candidates with the above qualifications will be considered for one of the three levels based on knowledge, skills, and abilities.

• Entry salary- $67,307.04
• Intermediate salary- $72,691.68
• Senior salary- $78,506.88

• Job may require operation of vehicles to plow snow and spread ice control materials.
• A postsecondary degree is the best measure to ensure candidates possess required engineering knowledge, including in applied physics and mathematics, drafting, engineering processes and procedures, project management, industry ethical standards, and analyzing and modeling data.

Minimum Qualifications - Non-ABET

• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field. OR
• 8 years of experience in construction inspecting or related field.
• Certification to operate nuclear gauges may be required.
• Successful completion of a work simulation examination and a medical-physical examination.

Successful candidates with the above qualifications will be considered for one of the three levels based on knowledge, skills, and abilities.

• Entry salary- $57,762.48
• Intermediate salary- $62,383.68
• Senior salary- $68,803.68
