Missouri Department of Transportation seeks a Construction Inspector to support the Improve I-70 Program from the O’Fallon office. The role inspects routine construction items for conformance to plans, specifications, and contracts under moderate supervision.

Responsibilities

• Coordinates and performs construction inspections verifying contractors’ activities comply with contracts, specifications, and engineering principles.
• Performs duties of inspector in charge of routine construction items, including plants, paving, grading, base, bridges, and culverts.
• Prepares final plans, change orders, contractor payment estimates, and engineering costs.
• Maintains construction documentation, records, and reports; informs supervisor of activities or unusual conditions.
• Provides field checks for surveying operations; serves as party chief on routine layout and staking; operates instruments for large structures.

This Missouri Department of Transportation is seeking a Construction Inspector for the statewide Improve I-70 Program. This program includes the planning, design, construction, reconstruction, rehabilitation, and repair of three lanes in each direction approximately 200 miles of I-70.

The construction inspector inspects routine construction items for conformance to plans, specifications, special provisions, and terms of the contract. Responsibilities are performed under moderate supervision.

What You'll Do

• Coordinates and performs construction inspections verifying that contractors' activities are in compliance with contracts, specifications, and engineering principles.
• Performs duties of inspector in charge of routine construction items, such as asphaltic or portland cement concrete plants, asphaltic or concrete paving, including grading and base, small bridges, concrete box and pipe culverts; inspects general or special items, such as utility adjustments, signing, traffic signals and lighting.
• Performs measurements, computations, or other work in preparing final plans, change orders, contractor payment estimates, and engineering costs.
• Maintains required construction documentation, records and files; prepares progress and other reports, keeps supervisor fully informed as to activities or unusual conditions on the job.
• Provides field checks for contractor surveying operations; serves as party chief on routine layout and staking; serves as instrument operator on staking of large bridges, other critical structures, or complex interchanges.

Minimum Qualifications

Successful candidates with the above qualifications will be considered for one of the three levels based on knowledge, skills, and abilities.

• Entry salary- $67,307.04
• Intermediate salary- $72,691.68
• Senior salary- $78,506.88

• A postsecondary degree is the best measure to ensure candidates possess required engineering knowledge, including in applied physics and mathematics, drafting, engineering processes and procedures, project management, industry ethical standards, and analyzing and modeling data.

Minimum Qualifications - Non-ABET

• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field. OR
• 8 years of experience in construction inspecting or related field.
• Certification to operate nuclear gauges may be required.
• Successful completion of a work simulation examination and a medical-physical examination.

Successful candidates with the above qualifications will be considered for one of the three levels based on knowledge, skills, and abilities.

• Entry salary- $57,762.48
• Intermediate salary- $62,383.68
• Senior salary- $68,803.68
