Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and performs construction inspections ensuring contractor compliance with contracts and engineering principles.
  • In charge of routine items such as plants, paving, grading, bridges, culverts, and signing; inspects utility work and traffic signals.
  • Performs measurements and prepares change orders, payment estimates, and cost calculations.
  • Maintains construction records, progress reports, and communicates with supervisor on unusual on-site conditions.
  • Provides field checks for surveying operations and serves as instrument operator on complex layouts.

This Missouri Department of Transportation is seeking a Construction Inspector for the statewide Improve I-70 Program. This program includes the planning, design, construction, reconstruction, rehabilitation, and repair of three lanes in each direction approximately 200 miles of I-70.

The construction inspector inspects routine construction items for conformance to plans, specifications, special provisions, and terms of the contract. Responsibilities are performed under moderate supervision.

What You’ll Do
  • Coordinates and performs construction inspections verifying that contractors' activities are in compliance with contracts, specifications, and engineering principles.
  • Performs duties of inspector in charge of routine construction items, such as asphaltic or portland cement concrete plants, asphaltic or concrete paving, including grading and base, small bridges, concrete box and pipe culverts; inspects general or special items, such as utility adjustments, signing, traffic signals and lighting.
  • Performs measurements, computations, or other work in preparing final plans, change orders, contractor payment estimates, and engineering costs.
  • Maintains required construction documentation, records and files; prepares progress and other reports, keeps supervisor fully informed as to activities or unusual conditions on the job.
  • Provides field checks for contractor surveying operations; serves as party chief on routine layout and staking; serves as instrument operator on staking of large bridges, other critical structures, or complex interchanges.

  • Certification to operate nuclear gauges may be required.
  • Successful completion of a work simulation examination and a medical-physical examination.

Successful candidates with the above qualifications will be considered for one of the three levels based on knowledge, skills, and abilities.

  • Entry salary- $67,307.04
  • Intermediate salary- $72,691.68
  • Senior salary- $78,506.88

  • Job requires exposure to physical hazards, health and safety risks, and/or adverse or otherwise undesirable characteristics in the environment.
  • Job may require operation of vehicles to plow snow and spread ice control materials.
  • A postsecondary degree is the best measure to ensure candidates possess required engineering knowledge, including in applied physics and mathematics, drafting, engineering processes and procedures, project management, industry ethical standards, and analyzing and modeling data.

Minimum Qualifications - Non-ABET
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field. OR
  • 8 years of experience in construction inspecting or related field.
  • Certification to operate nuclear gauges may be required.
  • Successful completion of a work simulation examination and a medical-physical examination.

Successful candidates with the above qualifications will be considered for one of the three levels based on knowledge, skills, and abilities.

  • Entry salary- $57,762.48
  • Intermediate salary- $62,383.68
  • Senior salary- $68,803.68
