Job Overview :

Baker Companies is seeking an experienced Commercial Construction Estimator to join our preconstruction and estimating team. This role is crucial in preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for commercial, residential, industrial, and government construction projects. You will be responsible for analyzing project specifications, reviewing blueprints, soliciting subcontractor bids, and ensuring all cost factors are considered to deliver precise and competitive proposals.

Key Responsibilities :

Analyze and interpret project plans, specifications, and other documentation to prepare accurate cost estimates.

  • Develop detailed quantity take-offs and material / labor cost calculations.
  • Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and supplier bids, ensuring competitive pricing and scope completeness.
  • Assess and apply historical cost data to improve estimating accuracy.
  • Prepare conceptual, preliminary, and final estimates for a variety of commercial construction projects.
  • Bid Preparation & Proposal Development :

Prepare and submit competitive bids and proposals in coordination with the preconstruction and project management teams.

  • Ensure all required bid documents, qualifications, and compliance requirements are met.
  • Collaborate with project managers, architects, engineers, and clients to clarify project scopes and address concerns.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities and value engineering options to enhance project feasibility.
  • Market Research & Subcontractor Relations :

Maintain strong relationships with subcontractors, suppliers, and industry professionals.

  • Stay updated on industry trends, market pricing, and new construction methodologies.
  • Conduct site visits as necessary to assess existing conditions and potential project challenges.

Identify potential risks and cost implications associated with project scope, materials, and labor.

  • Work closely with project teams to ensure estimates align with project goals and budget constraints.
  • Provide support during contract negotiations and preconstruction meetings.

Qualifications & Skills :

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field (preferred but not required).
  • 3+ years of experience in commercial construction estimating.
  • Strong knowledge of construction materials, methods, and industry best practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and technical documents.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication and negotiation abilities.
  • Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple bids simultaneously.

Preferred Experience :

  • Experience with commercial projects such as office buildings, retail centers, healthcare facilities, warehouses, or mixed-use developments.
  • Knowledge of local building codes, permitting processes, and labor market conditions.
  • Familiarity with Building Information Modeling (BIM) and digital estimating tools (preferred).
