Job summary

Audubon Companies is seeking a Construction/Certified Payroll Specialist in Houston, TX. You will handle payroll for construction staff, ensure timely and accurate compensation, and support certified payroll reporting for public works projects.

You will collaborate with HR, accounting, and project teams to verify hours, resolve discrepancies, and maintain thorough payroll records in compliance with labor regulations.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED, associate or bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • 3+ years of payroll processing experience, preferably in construction with rig pay, prevailing wage, and wage classifications.

Responsibilities

  • Process payroll for hourly and salaried construction employees, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  • Collect, review, and verify employee timesheets and work hours.
  • Calculate wages, overtime, deductions, and benefits using ADP.
  • Maintain accurate payroll records, reports, and documentation for audits and compliance.
  • Process full cycle payroll from new hire updates, time posting, payroll processing, to benefits funding.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local labor laws, including FLSA.
  • Prepare, review, and submit certified payroll reports for public works and prevailing wage projects (DOL, TWC, etc.).
  • Manage certified payroll submissions through systems such as LCP tracker or audit companies such as KPMG.
  • Track and resolve reporting errors, rejections, and compliance discrepancies.
  • Verify wage rates, labor classifications, fringe benefits, and deductions.
  • Maintain certified payroll documentation to support audits.
  • Collaborate with HR, accounting, and project teams to reconcile payroll and verify job codes, hours, and classifications.
  • Respond to employee inquiries regarding pay, deductions, and discrepancies in a timely manner.
  • Assist with payroll audits and resolve identified issues.
  • Support general payroll and administrative functions as needed.
  • Stay current on payroll regulations, wage laws, and construction labor requirements.

JOB DESCRIPTION :

The Payroll Specialist is responsible for processing payroll for construction employees, ensuring accurate and timely compensation in compliance with company policies and labor regulations. This role includes calculating wages, overtime, and deductions; maintaining payroll records; and supporting certified payroll reporting for public works projects. The Payroll Specialist collaborates closely with HR, accounting, and project teams to verify hours, resolve discrepancies, and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local requirements.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Process payroll for hourly and salaried construction employees, ensuring accuracy and compliance
  • Collect, review, and verify employee timesheets and work hours

EXPERIENCE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS :

  • High school diploma or GED required; associate or bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field preferred
  • 3+ years of payroll processing experience, preferably in the construction industry, including rig pay, prevailing wage and labor classification review
  • Proficiency with payroll systems (ADP), timekeeping software, and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong knowledge of payroll laws and labor regulations
  • High level of accuracy in payroll calculations and reporting
  • Ability to investigate and resolve payroll discrepancies efficiently
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Demonstrated integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to work independently and take initiative
