Job description

General Description

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a full-time Construction and Field Survey Technician located in Buffalo, Wyoming.
The position offers a $2,000 hiring bonus and other state benefits. Under general supervision, the Technician will conduct surveys, inspections on preliminary designs and construction projects, and perform material testing to maintain a safe, high-quality, efficient transportation system for the State of Wyoming.

Essential Functions
  • Organize and maintain project records, estimates, and reports
  • Review and check project documentation
  • Assist with topographic surveys and instrument operation
  • Conduct aggregate gradation, density, and concrete testing
  • Perform survey tasks such as drive stakes, hubs, hold tapes, and rods
  • Calculate slopes, areas, volumes, cuts, and fills
  • Inspect pipe backfill, fill construction, and paving operations
  • Carry out basic engineering computations
  • Sample and test bridges and roadways for QA/QC
  • Learn traffic control methods, manuals, and procedures
  • Complete training to maintain certifications and perform inspections
  • Communicate project information internally and externally
Preferences / Agency Requirements
  • Experience with Trimble TS2 data collector, Geopak, and Topcon software
  • Defensive driving and certifications in Portland Cement Concrete, Asphalt Concrete, Soil & Aggregate, ACI Concrete Level 2, QC/QA in soils & aggregate, Asphalt and Concrete
  • American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) certification
  • Valid Wyoming driver’s license
Knowledge
  • Materials testing, surveying methods, equipment operation, and willingness to learn
  • Construction inspection, interpretation of plans and specifications, and willingness to learn
  • Documentation of project records
  • Effective communication with supervisors and contractors
  • Aiming for or willing to learn a leadership role
  • Working outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Complicated computer calculations
  • Uploading and downloading survey files
  • Computer and calculator proficiency

Minimum Qualifications

Education and experience: 2–4 years progressive experience in construction and field surveying, or an associate’s degree with 0–1 year experience. No required certificates, licenses, or registrations.

Physical Working Conditions
  • Potential exposure to hazardous waste and biological waste
  • Workaround high‑speed traffic and heavy construction equipment
  • Work outdoors in inclement weather (heat, cold, wind, moisture)
  • Physical ability to bend, stoop, lift up to fifty pounds, and stand for long periods
  • Availability 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year
