Job summary

Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) seeks a Surveys Engineer in the Photogrammetry & Surveys Section in Cheyenne, WY. You will lead advanced surveying using GPS/RTK, LiDAR, drones, and digital levels to gather essential data for transportation design.

You will supervise preliminary survey operations, manage data collection, coordinate budgets, and ensure compliance with WYDOT standards while collaborating with a dedicated team and serving Wyoming communities.

Qualifications

  • Experience in surveying and mapping for road/bridge projects.
  • Knowledge of GPS/RTK, digital levels, total stations, and LiDAR data collection.
  • Familiar with WYDOT standards and data collection manuals.

Responsibilities

  • Set priorities for the Surveys Group to establish project control and collect data.
  • Review control coordinates and field surveys for accuracy.
  • Update Survey Database and archive data files and correspondence.
  • Lead survey meetings and prepare reports for distribution.
  • Prepare LOCO maps for permits to survey and manage budgets for equipment.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Join the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) as a Surveys Engineer in the Photogrammetry & Surveys Section in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and play a vital role in shaping the state's transportation infrastructure. In this dynamic position, you'll lead cutting-edge surveying efforts using advanced technologies such as GPS/RTK, digital levels, total stations, drones, and LiDAR scanning to deliver the accurate data that drives engineering innovation.

As the Surveys Engineer, you'll oversee and supervise all aspects of preliminary and supplemental survey operations, managing the collection of control networks, topographic, hydraulic, utility, and geologic data essential for transportation design. Your expertise will directly support WYDOT's mission to provide a safe, high-quality, and efficient transportation system while working alongside a team committed to excellence, innovation, and public service.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.

  • Sets priorities for the Surveys' Group to establish project control; coordinates and collects preliminary survey data including topography and planimetric features
  • Reviews project control coordinates and field-collected surveys for completeness and accuracy
  • Updates Survey Database and archive data files and correspondence
  • Updates Project Control System (PCS) Database when preliminary survey activities have been completed
  • Updates the Survey Manual and Data Collection Manual to provide instructions that establish and maintain specific survey standards and ensure uniformity in preliminary surveying practices
  • Leads survey meetings and prepares reports for distribution
  • Researches landowners and develops LOCO maps for the purpose of acquiring permits to survey
  • Prepares the Surveys' Group annual budget for the purchase of new equipment and maintenance of existing equipment
  • Holds weekly crew meetings and monthly safety meetings
  • Reviews and approves timecards, expense forms, and leave requests.
  • Reviews project expenditures for construction and maintenance supplies and equipment rentals
  • Conducts annual performance appraisals
  • Interviews and hires new personnel
Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with experience in surveying and mapping related to road and bridge construction projects.

  • Knowledge of engineering, surveying, and geodesy techniques, principles, and practices
  • Knowledge of procedures used in the planning, collection, processing, and calibration of GPS and RTK surveys, digital level surveys, and preliminary surveys
  • Knowledge of Leica Infinity and Cyclone software and MicroStation/Geopak CADD files. Autodesk software
  • Knowledge of Federal and State statutes and agency standards, policies and procedures including WYDOT's Survey Manual and Data Collection Manual
  • Ability to deal with difficult people and situations
  • Must have strong communication skills
  • Ability to build and maintain good relationships
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree (in Engineering)

2-4 years of progressive work experience (in Engineering) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Project Engineer

Professional Engineer's (PE) License Required at time of hire - (Wyoming PE required within one year of hire date.)

    • One year of service to WYDOT must be completed; failure to complete this requirement will forfeit the hiring incentive, and funds will be recouped from final pay.
    • Internal candidates would be required to remain in the position for a minimum of one (1) year from their promotion date.
    • Employees would only be eligible for one (1) hiring bonus in a 12-month period.
    • If the employee elects to downgrade through an active recruitment and/or appointment during the twelve (12) month period, they would be required to pay the bonus back.
