General Description

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Construction and Field Survey Technician to join our team in Lander, Wyoming. This full‑time position offers the opportunity to contribute to the planning, construction, and maintenance of safe, high‑quality, and efficient transportation systems across the state.

Under limited supervision, the role is responsible for performing surveys and inspections associated with preliminary design and active construction projects. The position also includes conducting material testing to ensure compliance with project specifications and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct field surveys to support project design and development
  • Perform inspections on active construction projects to ensure quality and compliance
  • Carry out material testing in accordance with established procedures and standards
  • Accurately collect, analyze, and document field data
  • Collaborate with engineering and construction teams to support project delivery
  • Promote and maintain WYDOT’s commitment to safety and operational excellence

Compensation

Hiring Bonus: $2,000 (eligible for temporary employees accepting a full‑time position, current employees accepting a promotional opportunity, and other qualified internal candidates under specified conditions as outlined by WYDOT).

Physical Working Conditions
  • Potentially exposed to hazardous waste and biological waste
  • Working around high‑speed traffic and heavy construction equipment
  • Work outdoors in various inclement weather conditions including heat, cold, snow, and wet
  • Physical ability: bending, stooping, and lifting up to fifty pounds; safely lifting and moving necessary materials; ability to stand for long periods
  • Must be available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year
Minimum Qualifications
  • 2‑4 years of progressive work experience in construction and field surveying with acquired knowledge at the level of a Construction and Field Survey Assistant
  • Associate’s Degree (or equivalent education/experience combination)
  • 0‑1 year of progressive work experience in construction and field surveying with acquired knowledge at the required level (alternative to the 2‑4 year requirement)
Certifications & Licenses
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • QC/QA Certification in Soils & Aggregate, Asphalt, and Concrete
  • Asphalt Concrete, Soil & Aggregate Certification
  • WYDOT Portland Cement Concrete Certification
  • ACI Concrete Level 2 Certification
  • AASHTO Certification
Knowledge & Skills
  • Materials testing, surveying methods, and equipment operation
  • Construction inspection and interpretation of plans and specifications
  • Documentation of project records
  • Communication with supervisors and contractors
  • Leadership potential and outdoor work in various weather conditions
  • Complex computer calculations related to material testing
  • Survey file management (uploading and downloading)

  • Qualifying eligibility and criteria for the hiring bonus:
    • Temporary employees accepting a full‑time position

    • One year of service to WYDOT must be completed; failure to complete forfeits the hiring incentive, and funds will be recouped from final pay
    • Internal candidates must remain in the position for a minimum of one year from promotion date
    • Employees are eligible for one hiring bonus in a 12‑month period
    • If the employee elects to downgrade through an active recruitment and/or appointment within 12 months, the bonus must be paid back
