General Description

Under general supervision, the Construction and Field Survey Technician will perform a variety of duties, including conducting surveys and inspections on preliminary designs and ongoing construction projects, and material testing to ensure the development of a safe, high‑quality, and efficient transportation system throughout the State of Wyoming. This position is located in Sundance, Wyoming.

Compensation and Benefits

Hiring Bonus: $2,000 (see notes for eligibility)

Essential Functions
  • Organize project records.
  • Review and check project documentation.
  • Prepare, review, maintain, and file construction project records, estimates, and reports.
  • Assist with topographic surveys.
  • Conduct aggregate gradation testing, density testing for earthwork and surfacing, and concrete testing.
  • Perform survey tasks such as drive stakes, hubs, hold tapes, hold the rod, and instrument operation.
  • Perform minor surveying computations such as slopes, areas, volumes, cuts, and fills.
  • Inspect pipe backfill and fill construction.
  • Inspect paving operations to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Perform basic engineering computations such as areas, volumes, material spread rates, and other related calculations.
  • Perform testing and sampling on bridges and roadways for analysis.
  • Review and learn traffic control methods, manuals, and procedures.
  • Perform more complex laboratory tests of samples and document results for QA/QC purposes.
  • Attend and complete all designated training sessions to maintain required certifications and perform inspections.
  • Communicate internally and externally regarding project information and actions or consequences on smaller projects.
Preferences / Agency Requirements

Preference may be given to applicants with experience using the Trimble TS2 data collector, Geopak, and Topcon software. The agency may require certifications in Defensive Driving, WYDOT Portland Cement Concrete, Asphalt Concrete, Soil & Aggregate, ACI Concrete Level 2, QC/QA Certification in Soils & Aggregate, Asphalt and Concrete, AASHTO Certification, and a valid Wyoming driver’s license.

  • Materials testing, surveying methods, equipment operation, and willingness to learn.
  • Construction inspection, interpretation of plans and specifications, and willingness to learn.

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience Substitution: 2‑4 years of progressive experience in Construction and Field Surveying with knowledge at the level of a Construction and Field Survey Assistant.

Education: Associate’s Degree.

Experience: 0‑1 year of progressive experience in Construction and Field Surveying with knowledge at the level of a Construction and Field Survey Assistant.

Physical Working Conditions
  • Potential exposure to hazardous waste and biological waste.
  • Workaround high‑speed traffic and heavy construction equipment.
  • Work outdoors in various inclement weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, and moisture.
  • Physical ability to bend, stoop, lift to fifty pounds, and stand for long periods.
  • Availability required 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year.

  • Qualifying eligibility and criteria for the hiring bonus:
    • Temporary employees accepting a full‑time position.
    • Current employees accepting a promotional opportunity with a publicly opened recruitment.
    • One year of service to WYDOT must be completed; failure to complete this requirement will result in forfeiture and repayment from final pay.
    • Internal candidates must remain in the position for a minimum of one year from their promotion date.
    • Employees are eligible for only one hiring bonus in a 12‑month period.
    • Employees who downgrade through an active recruitment and/or appointment within a 12‑month period must repay the bonus.
