Job summary

Gilliatte General Contractors, Inc. is seeking an Accountant in Indianapolis to support the financial operations of our growing construction company. This role emphasizes accuracy and organization on project-driven work.

The Accountant will manage AIA billing, job costing, accounts payable, project accounting, and payroll backup support while partnering with project managers and operations teams. 3+ years in construction accounting is preferred and proficiency with Excel is required.

Qualifications

• Associate or bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
• Minimum of 3 years accounting experience, preferably in construction or project-based industries.
• Hands-on experience with AIA billing, job costing, and accounts payable.
• Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel and accounting software.
• Excellent attention to detail, organization, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and submit monthly AIA billing applications, progress billings, and customer invoices.
• Track contract values, change orders, retainage, and project billing status.
• Partner with project managers to obtain supporting documentation and ensure timely billing submissions.
• Monitor accounts receivable and assist with collections activities.
• Maintain accurate job cost records across multiple projects.
• Review labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor costs for proper allocation and reporting.
• Assist with project budgeting, forecasting, and profitability analysis.
• Prepare and analyze job cost reports to support management decision-making.
• Process vendor invoices and subcontractor payments accurately and on schedule.
• Match invoices to purchase orders and assign appropriate job cost and general ledger coding.
• Reconcile vendor statements and resolve payment discrepancies.
• Support lien waiver administration, vendor compliance requirements, and payment tracking.
• Assist with month-end and year-end close activities.
• Prepare journal entries and account reconciliations.
• Support audits and financial reporting requirements.
• Serve as a backup for weekly payroll processing.

The accountant will be responsible for managing AIA billing, job costing, accounts payable, project accounting, and payroll backup support while partnering closely with project managers and operations teams. What You’ll Do

Construction Billing & Accounts Receivable

• Prepare and submit monthly AIA billing applications, progress billings, and customer invoices.

Job Costing & Project Accounting

• Perform additional accounting and administrative duties as needed.

Requirements

Required Qualifications

• Associate or bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
• Minimum of 3 years of accounting experience, preferably within construction, contracting, or other project-based industries.
• Hands-on experience with AIA billing, job costing, and accounts payable.
• Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel and accounting software.
• Excellent attention to detail, organization, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Strongly preferred experience with construction accounting software.
• Understanding of retainage, change orders, work-in-progress (WIP) schedules, and percentage-of-completion accounting.
• Experience supporting project managers, superintendents, and field operations teams.
