Job summary

Manassas Park City Schools seeks a Computer Technician I to provide first-level technical support for students and staff in Manassas Park. You will install, configure, maintain, and repair computer hardware, software, and related technology systems under the Director of Technology.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, deploy, and upgrade computer hardware, software, and peripheral equipment.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain desktop computers, laptops, Chromebooks, printers, and other technology devices.
  • Perform component-level repairs and replacement of internal hardware when appropriate.
  • Provide timely technical support to students and staff through in-person, telephone, email, and help desk requests.
  • Create, deploy, and maintain operating system images and device configurations.
  • Coordinate warranty repairs, equipment returns, and replacement with technology vendors.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records, asset management information, and service documentation.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on division technology equipment.
  • Travel between school locations to provide technical support as needed.

POSITION: COMPUTER TECHNICIAN LEVEL 1
LOCATION: Division-based
SALARY: Classified Scale, Grade 9 (salary placement based on verified related experience.)
HOURS: Full Time, 7.5 Hours per day
POSITION LENGTH: 245 Days (12-Months)
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Director of Technology
JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Computer Technician I provides first-level technical support for students and staff throughout Manassas Park City Schools. Under the direction of the Director of Technology, this position installs, configures, maintains, and repairs computer hardware, software, peripheral devices, and related technology systems. The technician responds to service requests, diagnoses technical issues, assists with network-connected devices, and supports the daily operation of instructional and administrative technology. This position does not supervise other employees.

REQUISITE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Working knowledge of the installation, configuration, operation, and troubleshooting of Microsoft Windows operating systems.
  • Working knowledge of ChromeOS installation, configuration, and troubleshooting.
  • Basic knowledge of computer hardware diagnostics, component-level repair, and device maintenance.
  • Basic understanding of network infrastructure, connectivity, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office applications and Google Workspace.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to explain technical concepts in a clear, user-friendly manner.
  • Strong customer service skills with a commitment to supporting staff and students.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple assignments, work independently, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to maintain accurate technical documentation, inventory records, and repair logs.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and technology initiatives.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Including, but not limited to, the following):
  • Install, configure, deploy, and upgrade computer hardware, software, and peripheral equipment.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain desktop computers, laptops, Chromebooks, printers, and other technology devices.
  • Perform component-level repairs and replacement of internal hardware when appropriate.
  • Provide timely technical support to students and staff through in-person, telephone, email, and help desk requests.
  • Create, deploy, and maintain operating system images and device configurations.
  • Coordinate warranty repairs, equipment returns, and replacement with technology vendors.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records, asset management information, and service documentation.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on division technology equipment.
  • Assist with the installation, relocation, and setup of technology equipment throughout the division.
  • Support technology initiatives, special projects, and district-wide deployments as assigned.
  • Travel between school locations to provide technical support as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student and employee information in accordance with division policies and applicable laws.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies, best practices, and division technology standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the mission and goals of Manassas Park City Schools.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires frequent walking, standing, climbing stairs, bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, and working under desks or other confined spaces while installing or repairing equipment. Frequent use of hands and fingers for keyboarding, cabling, and handling small electronic components is required.

The employee must regularly lift and carry equipment weighing up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift or move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Visual acuity, color recognition, manual dexterity, and the ability to distinguish small electronic components and wiring are necessary. The position also requires prolonged periods of computer use and the ability to communicate effectively in person, by telephone, and through electronic communication.

This position operates in a professional educational environment that includes schools, administrative offices, classrooms, computer labs, libraries, and other instructional spaces. The work requires frequent interaction with students, teachers, administrators, and support staff. Noise levels may range from quiet office settings to active classroom and school environments.

The position requires travel between school buildings and occasional work outside normal business hours to support technology deployments, maintenance, or emergency repairs.
