Position Summary This position involves activities of an assigned shift of personnel engaged in the operation and monitoring of data center facilities and related infrastructure equipment, such as HVAC , electrical grid, emergency backup UPS and generator systems, water/leak detection equipment, security and fire suppression systems, as well as research and enterprise servers, core networking services, and related services and equipment. Assist with installing server racks, cabinets, servers, storage devices, and network devices. Responsibilities include planning, scheduling, and coordinating those activities; the resolution of complex error situations with and without additional technical or supervisory assistance; making recommendations regarding new or improved service routines and production schedules. Work is performed alongside other shift personnel and subject to review by the Operations and Infrastructure leadership through conferences and evaluation of results obtained.

  • Through knowledge of the operation and monitoring of data center facilities and equipment, enterprise servers and networking equipment.
  • Ability to make decisions as to corrective action in instances of hardware malfunction, and adjustment of job priorities where required to meet schedules or optimize equipment usage.
  • Ability to plan, schedule and coordinate the work activities assigned to a shift.
  • Ability to train or assist in training newly hired personnel.
  • Make recommendations regarding new and improved service routines, production techniques, and modifications of or additions to computer equipment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communications with other Operations and EITS staff members, departmental and division management, and the campus community.

Physical Demands Lift 50 lbs., climb ladders, perform overhead work, operate hand tools and power tools, standing, bending, and kneeling.

Duties/Responsibilities

Monitor data center facility environmental controls and alarms following established procedures for problem reporting and resolution.

  • Uninterruptible Power Systems ( UPS )
  • Generators
  • HVAC systems
  • Fire suppression systems
  • Water/smoke detectors
  • Security cameras and access controls
  • Chilled water and room temperature controls/gauges
  • Monitor all building and core, campus network devices, as well as the central servers and storage devices providing central services for problems, provide incident response, and communicate with technicians to track problems through to resolution.

Monitor Student Information System production job execution via Banner/UC4 tools.

  • Monitor production jobs using Banner/UC4
  • Maintain a daily check sheet of production job failures
  • Notify programmers of job failures, system outages, or unusual system activity

Assist with the installation and monitoring of rack, server, and network equipment.

  • Identify the location of racks, servers, switches, and routers.
  • Connect equipment to power distribution units within the racks.
  • Install air vents and cable grommets in floor tiles. Insure proper airflow to equipment.
  • Implement and maintain facility infrastructure monitoring software providing alarm management, trend analysis and event notification support (Nagios, SolarWinds, Liebert, Automated Logic, etc.).
  • Monitor emerging technologies and applications in IT. Learn the effect on the overall data center topology. Produce and propagate new technical knowledge and skills for the department.

Receive and assemble incoming networking equipment and handle RMA process.

  • Receive all equipment and verify correctness of shipment.
  • Assemble equipment in preparation of configuration.
  • Notify appropriate support personnel of arrival of equipment.
  • Package, document, and schedule shipment of equipment for RMA .

Percentage of time 5

Maintain records/logs of hardware and software errors, production batch errors, problem resolution, and outages.

  • Maintain Operation logs by recording all pertinent events including system availability, scheduled/unscheduled maintenance and downtime, and corrective action taken in problem resolutions.
  • Assist client community to find solutions to problems they may have or by directing them to the appropriate EITS personnel to solve these problems.
  • Responsible for notification to the user community of any scheduled or unscheduled downtime of hardware or software housed in the Data Center.
  • Make service calls for hardware, software, or facility related issues as needed.

Attend training classes, seminars, e-learning sessions, and refresher courses to further develop required skills.

  • Participate in mandatory in-house training/refresher sessions as scheduled.
  • Perform periodic review of established Operational documentation.
  • Assist in directing or training Operations personnel.
  • Maintain effective customer service requirements.
