Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) is recruiting for a Complex Claims Director to independently handle a diverse docket of high-severity claims from our Financial Institutions, E&O, D&O, and Fiduciary teams. The role involves collaboration with senior management, underwriters, actuaries, brokers, insureds, and defense counsel.

Office locations include New York City, Atlanta, or Chicago. JD preferred; 3–8+ years of relevant claims or legal experience and strong negotiation are

Responsibilities

• Independently evaluate information on coverage, liability, and damages to determine exposure to insured and company.
• Occasionally handle high-visibility primary claim opportunities based on business needs, performance and capabilities.
• Attend mediations of complex claims and negotiate settlements.
• Provide outstanding customer service to insureds, brokers, and underwriters in handling and adjudication of claims.
• Analyze and draft coverage letters and communicate positions verbally and in writing.
• Draft reports, set reserves within authority, or make claim recommendations concerning reserve changes.
• Travel to conferences, mediations, and client meetings as necessary.

Job Opportunity

BHSI has an exciting opportunity for a Complex Claims Professional in our New York City, Atlanta, or Chicago offices. The Complex Claims Director will independently handle a diverse pending of high-severity claims underwritten out of the Financial Institutions and Commercial (i.e., Public Company) teams, focusing mainly on Financial Institutions, Errors & Omissions, Directors & Officers, and Fiduciary. This role will have a high level of interaction with internal customers (senior management, underwriters, and actuaries) as well as external customers (brokers, insureds, and defense counsel).

Duties & Responsibilities

• Independently evaluate information on coverage, liability, and damages to determine the extent of exposure to the insured and the company.
• While the majority of files handled in this role would be excess, the successful candidate may be considered for high-visibility primary claim opportunities in the future based on business needs, performance and demonstrated capabilities.
• Attend mediations of complex claims on behalf of the company and effectively negotiate settlements.
• Provide outstanding customer service to, and seamlessly work with, the insured, broker, and underwriters in the handling and adjudication of claims.
• Analyze and draft coverage letters as appropriate and communicate coverage positions effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Draft reports, set reserves within the authority, or make claim recommendations concerning reserve changes.
• Travel to conferences, mediations, and client meetings as necessary.

The base salary range for this position is $140,000 to $170,000, along with annual bonus eligibility. Total compensation for a candidate is determined by their relevant skills, location, and experience.
