Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Company (BHSI) in New York is seeking a Complex Claims Professional for our Casualty claims team. The role involves handling and adjusting all facets of casualty claims in a highly collaborative environment, with opportunities to work on primary and excess policies and advise clients and brokers.

The ideal candidate has 5+ years of casualty claims experience, strong analytical and negotiation skills, and licenses to adjust claims across jurisdictions.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 5 years' experience handling Casualty claims.
• Technical competence in casualty claims handling.
• Ability to work independently and learn from multiple sources.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, investigative and negotiation skills.
• Team player and able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Experience handling claims in multiple jurisdictions and possessing or obtaining adjuster licenses.
• JD preferred.

BHSI has an exciting opportunity for a Complex Claims Professional on our Casualty claims team. At BHSI, our claims professionals are an integral part of our business. Every claim is handled with the utmost skill by seasoned and dedicated claims professionals. We are seeking an experienced professional to join our growing team in the New York office. This position is a great opportunity for practicing lawyers looking to transition out of a law firm as well as claim professionals with casualty claims experience.

In this role, the Complex Claims Professional will have a unique opportunity to handle and adjust all facets of Casualty claims in a highly collaborative team environment, dedicated to best in class claims handling.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Manage and adjust Casualty claims impacting primary and excess policies while ensuring the highest level of customer service and technical claim file quality.
• Proactively handle claims from first notice of loss through ultimate resolution, while advising internal partners and meeting with clients and brokers.
• Collaborate and partner with the insured and broker in the handling and adjudication of claims.
• Analyze policy language, draft coverage letters as appropriate and communicate coverage positions effectively.
• Conduct, coordinate, and proactively handle the investigation process and ensure timely resolution of claims.
• Directly and closely monitor assignments to experts and defense counsel as necessary.
• Evaluate information related to coverage, liability, and damages to determine the extent of exposure to the insured and the company.
• Draft reports, set reserves within authority, and make claim recommendations concerning reserve changes.
• Travel to conferences, mediations, customer meetings, and trials as necessary.

Qualifications, Skills And Experience

• A minimum of 5 years of experience handling Casualty claims, or matching equivalency.
• Ability to demonstrate technical competence in the handling of specialized claims.
• Ability to work independently and assimilate learning materials on many different subjects from various sources.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, investigative and negotiation skills.
• Ability and willingness to work effectively in a team environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Demonstrated experience in handling and adjusting claims in multiple jurisdictions and must possess, or successfully obtain, the required adjuster licenses.
• JD preferred

The base salary range for this position is $140,000 to $160,000, along with annual bonus eligibility. Total compensation for a candidate is determined by their relevant skills, location, and experience.
