Job summary

UPMC Western Maryland is seeking a Phlebotomist to join the laboratory team. You will perform phlebotomy and specimen collection for inpatients and outpatients, ensuring accuracy and patient safety while supporting routine lab operations in a hospital setting.

You will interact with lab customers, follow proper collection procedures, transport specimens, and maintain data entry within information systems. The role may include training responsibilities and occasional arterial puncture following

Responsibilities

• Interact with laboratory customers courteously and professionally; respond to telephone inquiries promptly.
• Procure blood specimens by venipuncture, heel stick, and fingerstick following proper patient identification procedures.
• Instruct patients on collection procedures and collect samples as required.
• Demonstrate dependability, reliability, and independent judgment to prioritize department needs.
• Transport specimens to appropriate lab sections following safety procedures.
• Follow laboratory and hospital policies on procedures, quality control, safety, and hand hygiene.
• Enter demographic information, test orders, and charges into the information systems.
• Train and orient new employees, students, and residents as applicable.
• Inform staff and supervisors of unusual or problematic incidents.
• May perform arterial puncture following strict collection guidelines.
