Job summary

The Louisiana SPCA seeks an Animal Intake Diversion Associate to be the first contact for community members facing tough pet decisions. You guide surrender options, connect clients to safety-net resources, and help keep pets in loving homes whenever possible.

You will manage intake, screen for microchips, assist reunifications, educate the public on humane laws, and ensure accurate records. This role requires empathy, organization, and the ability to handle high-paced, onsite shelter operations.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; some college or a bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Must pass a criminal background check and pre-employment substance screening
  • Must have, or be able to obtain, a valid State of Louisiana driver’s license
  • Highly competent in Microsoft Office; accurate and detail oriented when entering information into shelter software
  • Excellent organizational and collaborative skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Proficient in mediating disputes, conflicts, and grievances with tact and professionalism
  • Serves on the core team for Storm & Emergency Response; extended hours may be required including weekends; 24-hour on-call during activations
  • Mental and physical flexibility is a must

Responsibilities

  • Guide surrender discussions to explore alternatives and keep pets in the home when possible
  • Connect clients to safety-net resources (Pet Food Pantry, low-cost vet, spay/neuter, etc.)
  • Assist with Pets for Life programs to help keep pets at home
  • Support self-rehoming by guiding owners to place pets responsibly
  • Help clients obtain pet food and manage shelter food pantry inventory
  • Document diversion conversations and outcomes for program tracking
  • Manage intake of owner surrender, stray, and return cases; gather histories
  • Scan for microchips and pursue reunification through registries and reports
  • Guide owners through redemption processes and fee requirements
  • Monitor animal condition at intake and flag medical/behavior concerns
  • Communicate empathetically to help families choose the best option
  • Educate the public on humane pet ownership and relevant laws
  • Provide friendly, efficient service in person, on the phone, and via email
  • Balance end-of-day revenue and ensure deposits are properly recorded
  • Keep paperwork organized and properly filed
