Job summary

The Nursing Assistant functions as a member of the nursing care team and assists licensed nursing staff in the care of patients/residents receiving preventive, acute, sub-acute chronic, maintenance, and hospice care.

Applicants may be tentatively selected pending completion of education/certification; requirements vary by GS level and include basic experience or education plus specialized training.

Qualifications

• Six months of general experience or education above high school related to NA.
• Completion of an intensive, occupation-related NA training program may meet experience requirements.
• May qualify under Grandfathering provisions for VA employees.
• GS-5 requires bachelor’s degree or 24 semester hours in health care related courses.

Responsibilities

• Assist licensed nursing staff in care of patients/residents with a range of needs.
• Observe patients and report deviations to supervisor in a timely manner.
• Use basic equipment and supplies for routine treatments and monitoring.
