Job summary

The University of Iowa seeks an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner to evaluate, diagnose, and manage patients with chronic pain conditions within our Pain Management program on campus in Iowa City, IA.

Responsibilities include comprehensive evaluations, developing personalized treatment plans, and prescribing medications in line with regulations. The role emphasizes interprofessional collaboration, patient education, and ongoing outcome monitoring to improve function and quality of life.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in nursing required; if Masters is in a related field, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing is required.
• Current ARNP specialty certification and licensure in the state of Iowa required.
• Current licensure to practice nursing in the State of Iowa.
• Strong clinical assessment, diagnostic, and patient management skills.
• Excellent communication and patient education abilities.
• Commitment to delivering compassionate, patient-centered care.
• Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
• BLS certification through the American Heart Association (obtained within 6 months of employment).

Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive patient evaluations, including history, physical examinations, pain assessments, and review of diagnostic studies.
• Diagnose and manage chronic pain conditions using evidence-based treatment approaches.
• Develop and implement personalized treatment plans that may include medication management, physical therapy, behavioral health strategies, lifestyle modifications, and interventional pain management services.
• Prescribe and manage opioid and non-opioid medications in accordance with applicable regulations and best practices.
• Monitor patient progress, evaluate treatment effectiveness, and adjust care plans to optimize outcomes.
• Provide follow-up care for patients undergoing interventional pain procedures.
• Conduct opioid risk assessments and oversee appropriate monitoring and compliance measures.
• Educate patients and their families regarding pain conditions, treatment options, medication safety and self-management strategies.
• Collaborate with physicians, therapists, behavioral health providers, and other specialists to coordinate comprehensive patient care.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation within the electronic health record.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives and contribute to the ongoing growth and success of the Pain Management program.
• Other duties as assigned.
