Description of duties / essential functions

The Houston Public Library seeks a Community Involvement Coordinator who is passionate about Houston's diverse community, has skills in system-level innovation and community development, and is willing to lead HPL's education services for Houston's diverse communities. As a vital member of the most diverse city in the nation, the Houston Public Library provides services and programs that celebrate Houston's diversity and build an integrated community for all 2.2 million residents of Houston. HPL-System-wide Programs supports staff, locations, and service units across HPL to serve Houston’s diverse communities, immigrants, and refugees, toward a strong, safe, and united city.

The Community Involvement Coordinator Will

• Oversee Citizenship, English and Language Learning education programs and services across the library system, including curriculum design, staff instructor training, and collaboration with established education service providers.
• Lead the development of adult education programs and classes, including services for international communities, immigrants, and refugees, such as multilingual digital inclusion classes and immigrant family learning.
• The programs are coordinated for all HPL service points, including the Central Library and across Neighborhood Libraries, and developed in collaboration with established education providers where appropriate.
• Demonstrate excellent communication skills to all levels of colleagues and external partners, including ability to lead trainings, presentations, and give clear direction on curricula.
• Be versatile in engaging across communities, organizations, and backgrounds, to bring about sustained collaboration.
• Have experience in program implementation, with a proven portfolio of community-building and volunteer management.
• Establish objective performance measurements using library industry analysis, customer feedback, and best practices to evaluate and monitor program effectiveness and impact to the community.
• Respond to inquiries, requests, and complaints as directed.
• Performs administrative work to include financial documents, agreements, purchase requests, volunteer coordination, maintaining statistics and reporting.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the head of Systemwide Programs.
• Work evening and weekend hours as needed.

Working Conditions

Work consists of standard procedures and tasks where analytic ability is required in following guidelines, policies and precedents. Involves scheduling, supervision and evaluation of work as a "first-line supervisor", recommends personnel actions, such as hiring, terminations, pay changes of non-supervisory personnel. The position is physically comfortable, the individual has discretion about walking, standing, etc. There are no major sources of discomfort, i.e., essentially normal office environment with acceptable lighting, temperature and air conditions. Requires the ability to make coordinated gross motor movements in response to changing external stimuli within moderately demanding tolerances; or the ability to make coordinated eye/hand movements on a patterned response space within low tolerance demands with no real speed requirements.

Educational Requirements

• Requires a Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Business Administration or a closely related field.

Other Experience Requirements

• Two years of experience in developing and coordinating community programs or a closely related field are required.

• Ability to plan and organize work and skilled at prioritization.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with others.
• Experience working with people of diverse backgrounds and a strong familiarity with public libraries is preferred.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Knowledge of current versions of MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook), Sirsi Symphony.
• Bilingual skills (Spanish/English) preferred.

Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.
