FULL-TIME COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT OFFICER - JOB
DESCRIPTION Location: HYBRID POSITION
Who We Are
The Black Child Development Institute – Ohio, an affiliate of the National Black Child
Development Institute (NBCDI), was established in 2017 to improve and advance the quality
of life of black and brown children and their families. BCDI- Ohio, is a trusted partner in
delivering culturally relevant, culturally responsive, and trauma-informed resources that
respond to the unique strengths and needs of Black children around issues including early
childhood education, health, child welfare, literacy, and family engagement.
We engage in public discourse on local and state to amplify the strengths and needs of Black
and Brown children and their families. Our guiding policy is that policy must respond to and
be informed by the needs of Black and Brown children and families and also recognize the
unique capacity of black and brown communities. BCDI Ohio’s staff and volunteers work
throughout the State facilitating programming, advocating, and informing policy.
JOB SUMMARY
The Community Engagement Officer is a pivotal role focused on strengthening the organization’s
connection with communities throughout Ohio . This position is designed for a passionate and proactive
advocate who understands the unique challenges faced by b lack and brown children and their families.
The officer will be responsible for developing and implementing community outreach initiatives,
fostering partnerships, and promoting programs that enhance the well - being of Black children. In this
role, you will engage with various stakeholders, including families, community organizations, schools,
and local government entities. Your efforts will ai m to raise awareness of BCDI Ohio’s mission and
programs, mobilize community participation, and advocate for systemic changes that support the healthy
development of b lack and brown children.
The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills, cultural competency, and a
commitment to community empowerment. The community engagement officer will be a crucial
link between BCDI Ohio and the community, ensuring that the voices of families are heard and
their needs are met through targeted programming and advocacy efforts.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE
• Community Outreach and Engagement:
o Develop and implement outreach strategies to connect with families, local
organizations, and community members.
o Organize informational sessions, workshops, and focus groups to educate the
community about BCDI’s programs and resources.
• Partnership Building:
o Establish and maintain strong relationships with schools, community
organizations, and local leaders.
o Collaborate with partners to create synergies that enhance program effectiveness
and community reach.
• Program Development and Support:

o Work with internal teams to design and implement community - focused programs
addressing the needs of b lack and brown children and families.
o Assist in coordinating and executing events that promote BCDI’s mission and
initiatives.
• Advocacy and Representation:
o Represent BCDI - Ohio at community meetings, forums, and events, advocating
for policies that benefit b lack and brown children and families.
o Engage with local government and stakeholders to influence systemic changes
that support community needs.
• Data Collection and Program Evaluation:
o Gather feedback from community members to evaluate program effectiveness and
identify areas for improvement.
o Analyze data and prepare reports on community engagement efforts and outcomes
for BCDI Ohio leadership.
• Communications and Public Relations:
o Create engaging content for newsletters, social media, and other communication
platforms to keep the community informed.
o Share success stories and testimonials that highlight the impact of BCDI Ohio
work in the community.
• Event Planning and Coordination:
o Organize and facilitate community events that promote awareness, education, and
engagement with BCDI’s initiatives.
o Ensure events are accessible, inclusive, and culturally relevant to the target
audience.
• Resource Development:
o Identify funding opportunities and assist in grant writing or proposal development
to support community engagement initiatives.
o Collaborate with BCDI Ohio staff to secure resources that enhance program
delivery and community outreach.
QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION , EXPERIENCE
• A commitment to being outcome - based.
• A track record of successful team building and development.
• Exceptionally strong written and verbal communication skills.
• A commitment to quality programs and excellence in organizational and project management. •
• Ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders, including organizational leaders,
coalitions, policymakers, parents, and members.
• Deep comfort level with discussions of race, culture and class and a commitment to a strengths
based, culturally relevant approach that supports b lack and brown children, families, and
communities.
• Successful experience with grant - writing and other fundraising efforts. .
• Ability to thrive in a fast - paced, deadline - driven environment with the capacity to
make decisions and anticipate needs.
• A commitment to the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
• Exceptional communication skills with commitment to quality of written and verbal
materials.
