Work for the IMF. Work for the World. The Communications Department (COM) is the Fund’s strategic center for communications. It develops and coordinates the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) external and internal communications strategy, shapes the IMF's key messages, advises IMF Management and staff on how best to convey key messages, and monitors and responds to what people outside the IMF say about the institution and its activity. The Policy Communications Division (COMPC) works with other COM divisions and the Front Office to develop and disseminate IMF messages to a variety of audiences, including policymakers, academics, media, civil society, students, and the educated lay public. The Division creates and publishes content on several platforms: IMF Blog, Finance & Development (F&D) Magazine, Country Focus, Weekend Read newsletter, the IMF's Factsheet Series, as well as multimedia products such as podcasts and videos and social media products and campaigns. COMPC also monitors and assesses the impact of products, using data analytics.

Job Summary

Transforms charts, graphs, and data from IMF research and analytical products into clear, compelling visual communications assets, and creates original infographics and visual concepts that make complex economic and policy issues accessible to diverse audiences. Also supports graphic design, audience analytics, performance measurement, and innovation in digital production across COMPC platforms. We expect applicants to have intellectual curiosity about economics, finance, public policy, and international affairs, and a strong interest in the IMF’s role and mandate.

Responsibilities

• Transforming existing charts, graphs, and data visualizations from research reports and other analytical products into clear, compelling, and visually engaging communications assets for IMF Blog, Country Focus, F&D, and the Weekend Read.
• Most work begins with an existing chart, though the role also involves building charts from raw data when needed.
• Developing original visual concepts, infographics, and dashboards that support key messages, explain complex topics, and enhance storytelling for both specialist and non-specialist audiences.
• Working with economists, researchers, authors, and editors to interpret their data and findings, then determining the most effective and accurate way to present them visually.
• Producing graphic design assets for digital and print publications, social media, campaigns, events, and other communications initiatives, while ensuring consistency with IMF brand standards.
• Supporting the Division's performance measurement and audience analytics by tracking key indicators, analyzing engagement trends, and helping convey insights that can inform content and distribution strategies.
• Using AI-enabled tools and experimenting with innovative digital workflows to improve production processes, strengthen visual storytelling, and enhance the effectiveness of communications products.
• Contributing to other divisional and departmental efforts as needed.
• This is a one-year contractual appointment renewable for up to four years, pending the incumbent’s performance, budget availability, and continuing business need.

Requirements

• Educational development, typically acquired by the completion of an advanced university degree, or equivalent, in communications, graphic design, data visualization, information design, digital media, international relations, or a related field.
• Alternatively, a university degree, or equivalent, and six (6) years of relevant professional experience are required.
• Advanced proficiency in Adobe Illustrator is essential.
• This is both a data visualization and design role, so candidates must also be able to work from a spreadsheet and build the chart themselves.
• These skills should be evident in the candidate’s portfolio.
• Strong Excel skills and the ability to interpret datasets and identify findings worth visualizing.
• A strong portfolio demonstrating the ability to translate complex quantitative information into clear, compelling charts, infographics, and other digital communications products.
• Strong attention to detail and visual judgment, with the ability to translate technical material into accessible visuals for broader audiences.
• Experience with data visualization and interactive charting platforms, such as Datawrapper and Flourish, is highly desirable.
• Familiarity with performance measurement, audience analytics, and the use of data to assess the effectiveness of communications products.
• Experience working with economists, researchers, and policy experts is an asset.
• This is a one-year contractual appointment renewable for up to four years, pending the incumbent’s performance, budget availability, and continuing business need.
