Job summary

Camden County Sheriff's Office is seeking a Public Safety Dispatcher to receive emergency and non-emergency calls and dispatch the appropriate personnel across Police, EMS, Fire and Sheriff's Office within the county.

Successful applicants will demonstrate the ability to read and write at a high school level, maintain calm under pressure, and work rotating 12-hour shifts. The role requires on-call availability and passing GCIC/NCIC and EMT-related certifications as required.

Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to read and write at a level consistent with a high school diploma.
  • 1–2 years of related experience or apprenticeship/internship.
  • GCIC/NCIC certification obtainable.
  • First-aid CPR certification obtainable.
  • Valid state driver’s license.
  • EMD, Fire Emergency Dispatch (EFD), and Basic Communications Officer certifications obtainable.
  • May be assigned other related duties.
  • In emergencies, Camden County employees may be required to perform additional duties.

Responsibilities

  • Receive, screen, categorize and prioritize emergency and non-emergency calls.
  • Provide emergency medical instructions to callers as appropriate.
  • Receive, monitor and dispatch radio communications for Police, EMS, Fire and Sheriff's Office.
  • Dispatch appropriate emergency personnel to incidents.
  • Monitor two-way radio and enter data into CAD.
  • Maintain contact with emergency personnel.
  • Reroute calls to PSAP or notify other agencies as needed for assistance.
  • Maintain GCIC file security and integrity.
  • Participate in training exercises.
  • Rotating 12-hour shifts and on-call availability.
  • Know NCIC regulations and radio codes.
  • Understand Camden County boundaries and SOPs for agencies.
  • Operate computer networks, OS, hardware and software applications.
  • Type rapidly and accurately.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Interpersonal relations and communication skills.
  • Complete required training and wear headset while on duty.

Job description

Department: 100-3300 - Camden County Sheriff's Office

This position is responsible for receiving emergency and administrative calls from the public and dispatching the appropriate emergency personnel.

Qualifications
  • Minimum of 18 years of age
  • High School diploma or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma
  • Ability to read, and write at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school diploma or equivalent
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship or internship, or having had a similar position for one to two years
  • Possession or ability to readily obtain GCIC/NCIC Certification
  • Possession or ability to readily obtain a First-aid CPR certification
  • Possession of a valid state driver’s license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD), Fire Emergency Dispatch (EFD) certifications through National Academies of Emergency Dispatch
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain Basic Communications Officer Certification
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
  • In the event of an emergency, all Camden County employees are considered essential and may be required to perform alternate duties
Special Requirements
  • Receive, screen, categorize and prioritize emergency and non-emergency calls for service
  • Provide emergency medical instructions to callers prior to the arrival of emergency personnel as appropriate
  • Receive, monitor and dispatch radio communications traffic for Police, EMS, Fire and Sheriff's Office throughout the county
  • Dispatch the appropriate emergency personnel to incident locations to include, but not limited to, coroner, animal control, utility crews, etc.
  • Monitor two-way radio communications and enter emergency and non-emergency data into computer aided dispatch software (CAD)
  • Maintain contact with emergency personnel
  • Reroute calls to the appropriate Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) or notify other agencies of calls for service that fall outside of Camden County's jurisdiction, as well as notifying other departments or agencies as needed for assistance
  • Maintain security and integrity of the office and GCIC files
  • Participate in training exercises
  • Rotating 12 hour shifts and be available for mandatory on-call
  • Know and understand regulations and procedures of state and National Crime Information Centers (NCIC)
  • Know and understand radio codes and signals used in public safety work
  • Know and understand boundaries and geography of Camden County
  • Know standard operating procedures for various agencies
  • Computer networks, operating systems, hardware and software applications
  • Skills in operating a computer and standard office equipment
  • The ability to type rapidly and accurately
  • Handle the public and emergency response service personnel
  • Knowledge in collecting, organizing and analyzing diverse information in order to decide upon an appropriate and reasonable course of action, especially in emergency situations
