Job summary

Aurora Humanitarian Initiative is seeking a Communications & Engagement Associate to shape press and advocacy strategies, engage journalists and external partners, and amplify the profiles of Aurora Luminaries. You will work across communications and program areas in a fast-paced, multinational team based in Washington, DC with some hybrid flexibility.

You will develop press materials, manage campaigns, and collaborate with consultants to raise Aurora’s public profile and support international

Qualifications

• 3–5 years of experience in communications, public relations, or external affairs.
• Excellent writer, editor, and verbal communicator with a clear, compelling style.
• Background in nonprofit, humanitarian, international development, or UN settings preferred.
• Existing network of press, new media, and communications contacts.
• Strong, detail-oriented multitasker with a roll-up-the-sleeves mentality.
• Team player providing high-level support to internal and external constituencies.
• Strong project-management skills with ability to balance multiple priorities.
• Experience with MS Office applications, especially Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
• Experience working internationally strongly preferred.
• Based in the D.C. area; able to travel domestically and internationally.

Responsibilities

• Develop and execute communication and press strategies for Aurora events and leadership participation at conferences.
• Draft, edit, and aggregate communications materials (press releases, talking points, op-eds, speeches, newsletters, memos).
• Secure press coverage through coordinated outreach to journalists and media.
• Increase coverage in non-traditional media (podcasts, social media).
• Assist in planning, execution, and tracking of cross-functional projects across teams.
• Collaborate with internal teams, consultants, and partners to ensure timely information/workflow.
• Serve as thought partner on comms/press strategy and advocacy initiatives.
• Support social media team in online campaigns/advocacy initiatives.
• Develop and spearhead advocacy initiatives to increase international funding for local actors.
• Maintain and update work plans; manage project execution.
